Toshiba will launch a trio of new HD DVD players as early as October, all priced less than 500 dollars in the US.

The third generation line-up will include the 1080i HD-A3, priced at 299 dollars, the 1080p HD-A30 (399 dollars) and the high-end HD A-35 (499 dollars). No product specifics have been formally announced.

Expect more UK specific info at the upcoming IFA tech show.

Toshiba Announces Third Generation HD DVD Player Lineup

The third time's a charm with Toshiba's HD DVD player lineup

Toshiba isn't standing still when it comes to the development of HD DVD players. The company announced today that it has revamped its entry-level, mid-range and high-end players and that all three will retail for under $500.

"With a majority market share in unit sales of next generation DVD players, consumers are speaking loud and clear, and they are adopting HD DVD as their HD movie format of choice," said Jodi Sally, VP of Marketing for Toshiba's Digital A/V Group. "Because of the proven manufacturing efficiencies of the HD DVD format, Toshiba can bring this level of innovation in technology to a new generation of players with cutting-edge functionality at affordable prices."

The first new model is the entry-level HD-A3. Toshiba didn't divulge many details on the HD-A3 other than the fact that it features 1080i output. The mid-range HD-A30 adds support for 1080p output along with what Toshiba calls "CE-Link" or HDMI-CEC. CE-Link allows for a two-way connection between the HD DVD player and TV over HMDI.

The high-end HD-A35 also features 1080p support and CE-Link, but also adds support for Deep Color over HDMI, 5.1 channel analog audio output and High Bit Rate 7.1 Audio over HDMI.

All three players feature a slimmer exterior design with rounded edges and a high-gloss black finish. According to Toshiba, the third generation players are half as tall as the first generation units.

Toshiba's HD-A30 will be available in September at a price of $399.99. The HD-A3 and HD-A35 will be available in October with price tags of $299.99 and $499.99 respectively.

The new players boast 1080p image support and both the HD-EP30 and the HD-EP35 introduce new features to the HD DVD range REGZA-Link (HDMI, CEC-Link) connectivity and native 24 frames per second playback support.

In addition the HD-EP35 also supports High Bit Rate Audio (up to 7.1 channels) via HDMI. The 24 frames per second (24Hz) support means viewers will be able to watch movies how they are traditionally captured which should avoid motion judder.

While both new models also feature 1080p support the "step up" HD-EP35 includes Deep Colour support via HDMI.

This feature allows compatible display devices to deliver

outstanding video quality through an array of millions of possible colour pixels; blacks should appear deeper and more solid, while bright tones are so vivid they appear almost tangible.

Toshiba’s new REGZA-Link (HDMI-CEC) functionality. This feature offers the capability to control other CE devices with a single remote control.

Compatible with Toshiba’s REGZA-Link (HDMI-CEC) enabled REGZA 2007 LCD TV line-up, this new feature will allow the viewer to turn on their TV, HD DVD player and start playing a film simply by using the HD DVD player remote.

In terms of next generation audio, the HD-EP35 continues the support of 5.1 channel analogue output and is the first Toshiba model to support High Bit Rate Audio (up to 7.1 channels) via HDMI, while both players carry Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD and DTS HD formats.
