TERMINATOR 4 ( 2009 )

Ερχεται το 2009 !!!

Ever since the news hit about the Terminator series continuing, it has been rather quiet. Finally an update today comes from James Middleton, a producer on the TV series "The Sarah Connor Chronicles", who is also overseeing the development of Terminator 4. Middleton confirms via IGN that T4 is still happening and aiming to be in pre-production by this October for a 2009 release. The script is being written by Michael Ferris and John D. Brancato, who co-wrote Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and that no director has been chosen yet.

The film will be titled just Terminator with a subtitle (like "Rise of the Machines"), not with the number 4. This isn't that revealing, except that the marketing strategy they're trying to go with is starting from complete scratch. Given that The Halcyon Company bought the rights entirely last year, it's obvious their strategy is to start from scratch without really continuing what was essentially an unsuccessful Terminator 3.

The story in T4 follows the events of T3 and will be post-apocalyptic including the characters of John Connor and Kate Brewster, the two who survived at the end of the movie. As for whether Nick Stahl and Claire Danes will return, that is dependent on "many factors, including the thoughts of the eventual director and others involved." Middleton also adds that T4 will feature a new hero, explaining "Ben-Hur was influenced by Jesus Christ, but it was his story. Much in that way, this character will be influenced by John Connor." A Jesus Christ reference in the Terminator world? Is that good or bad, I don't know.

The Halcyon Company is still going to produce a complete trilogy of new Terminator films. Right now I will say that I'm excited, but also a bit unsure. I know the general response to Terminator 3 was terrible. I remember going on opening day to a nearly empty 500-seat movie theater, it was a shame, although I ended up liking the movie. I'm curious to see how they bring back the franchise and whether it draws crowds. Are you excited for Terminator 4?

Alex Proyas Directing Dracula Year Zero

There isn't enough justification yet to say vampires are a returning trend, but there are quite a few films coming soon (the rest of them are listed below). The latest to add to that list is one titled Dracula Year Zero that's to be directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City, I, Robot). The film will tell the origin story of Vlad the Impaler, a Romanian prince who inspired Bram Stoker's vampire tale.

Apparently there is quite a bit of enthusiasm around the script, written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, which had the goal of showing off Vlad when he was still vital and to explore the fact that he's considered a hero in Romania for fending off the Turks. Proyas complimented the "fresh take on the legend" and said the project manages to play off the horror and the sympathy you have for a character that "sells his soul to the Devil to save his kingdom and family." Instead of showing the character Vlad when "he's past his prime and 100 years old," they're telling his story when "he's at the height of his powers."

The other vampire projects in the works in Hollywood at the moment are: a Dracula sequel titled The Un-Dead; a Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke movie called Daybreakers; another Vlad movie called The Historian; Sylvain White's Castlevania adaptation; and two films coming up for release this year which include 30 Days of Night and I Am Legend. With this vampire movie that makes around 7 in total.

David Goyer Directing The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire

This vampire trend is almost getting a little bit out of hand. However, here's one that could turn out good, it's a graphic novel by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden titled "Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire." A script is being written by Mignola and Golden and the film will be directed by David Goyer (The Invisible, Magneto). You can't go wrong with Mike Mignola - Hellboy is fantastic and this seems just as richly depicted.

The newly published graphic novel tells the story of the awakening of supreme evil on Earth. Lord Henry Baltimore is bitten by a demonic vampire bat on a WWI battlefield. The plague destroys his family, and Baltimore creates a team to hunt and fight the Red King, the embodiment of all evil. Sound far-fetched? I'd say it does, but maybe that's the kind of far-fetched that makes great movies.

Guillermo del Toro's Next Film IS At the Mountains of Madness!

This has been one of those in-the-works passion projects for Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro. He was even talking about it to some interested fans back at Comic-Con in 2006, but the film hasn't really gone anywhere - until now! The guys at LatinoReview.com have learned that Guillermo will be directing At the Mountains of Madness next after he finishes Hellboy 2 (due for release on July 11, 2008) for Universal Studios. The film is adapted from the H.P. Lovecraft novel about explorers who journey to Antarctica where they uncover an ancient race of beasts in the ruins of a lost civilization.

The novella was first written in 1931 and the story is considered to represent the decisive "demythology" of Cthulhu. You can pick up a copy of it from Amazon.com if you're interested in reading it well before Guillermo makes his version. The script is also supposedly really damn good, written by Guillermo himself, with a script review available at LatinoReview.com as well.

Transformers 2 Writers Confirmed

Source: The Hollywood Reporter October 4, 2007

Screenwriter Ehren Kruger and the writing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are in talks to team to write the screenplay for DreamWorks/Paramount's Transformers 2, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Director Michael Bay, star Shia LaBeouf and producers Tom DeSanto, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Don Murphy are back in their respective chairs, as is executive producer Steven Spielberg.

The trade adds that the teaming of A-listers to write such a huge project might be an industry first and could have been necessary because Kurtzman and Orci -- who wrote first movie -- also are busy writing J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie for Paramount and producing Eagle Eye for DreamWorks.

The three writers are also working together on Nightlife, a DreamWorks serial-killer project that sees Kruger adapting a Thomas Perry novel, with Kurtzman and Orci producing along with Neal Moritz. Kruger also adapted the Stephen King novel "The Talisman," which Spielberg is exec producing for TNT.

Kruger met with Bay and Hasbro president Brian Goldner and impressed the duo with his knowledge of the "Transformers" mythology.

CRANK 2

Crank writers/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are currently out shooting their other film The Game, but the plans are to start shooting Crank 2 early next year. Still not excited?

A recent interview with Mark and Brian spills some details and now it's starting to sound a whole lot better.

Crank 2 will pick up exactly where Crank one ends," says Taylor. "It's a true sequel. Jason Statham will return. It's not a prequel, it's not his brother, it's not a dream sequence. He will [scrape himself off the floor]".

"We're finding that a lot of people were thinking, 'Oh, Crank 2 can't be done'," adds Neveldine. "But we came up with an idea, we wrote the script, and after the studio read it they couldn’t believe that we pulled it off. And of course, the best test was giving it to Jason and Jason turned down every other project so he could do this, start this in the spring of next year. He was so excited, he couldn't believe it".

It's going to be more sexual, more violent – more of everything," laughs Taylor. "We realise with a movie like Crank, you can't do a sequel and do 60% or 70% of what the original was. You have to go twice as hard. So that's what we’re going to do. If we're going to live up to the first one with the sequel – we're taking it WAY past the point of the first one."

EverQuest Movie

http://everquest.station.sony.com/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EverQuest

Just yesterday I was mentioning how video game adaptations are not looked upon highly in Hollywood. Today IGN reports that the MMORPG game EverQuest is getting a big screen adaptation with none other than ex-Marvel CEO Avi Arad, who has been the biggest production force behind films like Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and so on. Sony Pictures is aiming for a 2009 or 2010 tentpole release.

A screenplay is being written by Michael Gordon (300). Story details are unknown, but the fantasy epic will be based on an original pitch by Gordon and will feature some seminal characters from the game.

EverQuest takes place in the fantastical world of Norrath, a realm inhabited by 14 different races including humans, ogres, elves and animal-human hybrids, and its moon Luclin. Other planes of reality also exist within the game's universe. Players create avatars that can slay monsters, embark on quests or acquire treasure. The game was one of the more successful MMORPG's that originally launched in 1999 well before World of Warcraft.

Wolverine Special FX Gets Top Notch Crew!

20th Century Fox have secured Visual Effects Coordinator Damien Carr, a man who has worked alongside ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) on some of the biggest blockbusters to hit our screens recently. His credits include Pirates of the Carribean, Transformers and The Chronicles of Narnia. I have to admit the visual FX in Pirates and Transformers was damn impressive. Good to see some great talent on board!

Also as we repoted earlier The Wolverine script that was written for the upcoming movie was panned by alot of comic book fans and now comes the news that the writer of SwordFish and the upcoming Hitman movie is going to take a stab at the Wolverine movie script. Skip Woods will work to give us a Wolverine movie that fits the character!

The movie according to FOX will begin this November with yes... Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine. Unlike the Xmen films this one will film in Australia, which makes sense since Hugh is an Aussie.

Matthew Vaughn on Thor's $300 Million Budget and Script

One of Marvel's big upcoming feature films is an adaptation of Thor, the giant hammer-wielding Norse warrior. And we mean big - director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust) wanted a $300 million dollar budget! Although Vaughn is directing Thor, the script is being written by Mark Protosevich (The Cell, Poseidon, I Am Legend) and was recently turned into Marvel. Over at London-born Vaughn's blog on The Guardian, he says that the original draft of the script would cost $300 million to make and Marvel wants them to cut that amount in half.

Vaughn and Protosevich worked on the script together, and Vaughn reports on the very latest from the offices of Marvel Entertainment.

"My phone has just rung. Marvel loves the script. The only problem is that it has been costed at $300m and they ask how I am going to reduce it by $150m. I think I prefer being asked what it's like working with De Niro."

Vaughn also briefly tapped in on the script, without any details besides how they celebrated its completion - with a nice bottle of wine.

"In truth, I did not treat [screenwriter Mark Protosevich] very well as I forced him to work for the whole weekend - he is the writer on Thor, my next film, which I am directing with Marvel. The weekend was a success - we finished the script and celebrated with an '88 Palmer, and I was feeling good and ready to tackle the necessary evil of film promotion."

Thankfully I agree with this budget cut. I didn't overly enjoy Stardust, Vaughn's latest film, and I'm not a fan of Thor, nor are that many comic book readers. It may turn out to be a great movie, but Thor's following is vastly less than Spider-Man, the X-Men, or Batman. An inflated budget of $300 million would result in a mess of a superhero film this time around. Is $150 million even too much for a director who's just moving onto his third film and for a comic book superhero that isn't that big?

New Star Trek Casting !!

Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Eric Bana as the Villain

Finally some major updates in regards to the casting on J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek XI. Eric Bana as the movie's villain named Nero has been confirmed, but the casting on Captain Kirk has not. Reports state that Chris Pine (Just My Luck, Smokin’ Aces) is "in talks" to star as Captain Kirk, but scheduling conflicts mean he's not confirmed. Paramount and Abrams are set on Pine, but he's got to choose between Star Trek or White Jazz. What does the line-up on the bridge of the USS Enterprise look like now?

Out of the primary cast aboard the Enterprise, we're still missing Bones, Scotty, and Sulu. It's starting to come together and damn is it starting to look good. Early on Matt Damon was rumored to be cast as Kirk, but obviously that was just a big rumor. Although Abrams had for a long time expressed interest in casting a major star in the role, it looks like Chris Pine is who he ended up with.

As for details on Eric Bana and his role as Nero, nothing has been stated. Not even a character description has been provided and all that's known is his name. The film is aiming to start production in November and go through March. If Chris Pine decides to take the other offer, Paramount will be ready, as they're already working on backup actors to fill his role.

How do you think this Star Trek coming along? I can tell you one thing for sure, they're trying to make this epic as hell. No Nemesis, this is all about a new cast, a new story, and getting every last person off their asses and in theaters to see in when it hits next December 25th, 2008. It's going to be epic and I know J.J. Abrams is going to deliver.
