Howard Stringer has revealed that Sony now anticipates a launch of the PlayStation 3 just in time for Xmas. Whilst extremely disappointing for all of us who have been secretly hoping for a miraculous Spring launch, the PS3 might well benefit from a bit of extra time to tweak itself if it is to overcome the impressive Xbox 360.

We’re assuming that an Xmas launch is likely to mean Spring here in the UK but I suppose we can keep our fingers crossed for a simultaneous worldwide release. I guess everyone over at Microsoft are all very pleased with the prospect of a years worth of unchallenged next-generation sales too.

Sony's new PlayStation 3 was widely expected to be introduced this spring, but will be delayed as the company fine-tunes the chips that are crucial to the success of the console's Blu-ray function.

The PlayStation 3 --- which is being called "the poor man's Blue-ray" --- is vital to Sony's plans because it plays Blu-ray discs as well as videogames.

Sony will roll out the PS3 by year end, in time for the holidays. If PS3 "delivers what everyone thinks it will, the game is up," Stringer boasts.

Blu-ray is the system developed by Sony to view next-generation high-definition DVDs. Rival format HD DVD is championed by Toshiba. Microsoft recently joined the HD DVD camp, a move that came as its Xbox 360 videogame console is trying to grab market share from PlayStation, the industry leader.

Γιάννο λιγάκι δύσκολο να γίνει ταυτόχρονη κυκλοφορία σε Αμερική , Ασία και Ευρώπη (εδώ και η προσπάθει της Microsoft κατάφερε να κάνει συλλεκτικό το XBOX360).Απλός αν κυκλοφορήσει Αμερική κατά τα Χριστούγεννα περίμενε εδώ να έρθει Άνοιξη...(αν οι ανακοινώσεις είναι σωστές και όχι ....χαλασμένο τηλέφωνο)

Πάντως είναι πολιτική της sony να σνομπάρει την Ευρώπη και ποτέ δεν το κατάλαβα αυτό. Ειδικά με το psp φάνηκε πάρα πολύ. Κρίμα πάντως γιατί το παίζει μονοπώλιο και κάνει ό,τι γουστάρει. Της χρειάζεται ένα μάθημα για ν' αλλάξει τακτική.

Μιλώντας στην ιστοσελίδα GamesIndustry, υψηλόβαθμο στέλεχος της Sony απέκλεισε το ενδεχόμενο ταυτόχρονης κυκλοφορίας του PlayStation 3 σε Αμερική και Ευρώπη. Αυτή η δήλωση του Nick Sharples ήρθε για να διαψεύσει τις φήμες που ήθελαν μια, παρόμοια με αυτήν της Microsoft, κίνηση από τον Ιαπωνικό κολοσσό, καθώς μετά από σχόλια του David Reeves, προέδρου της Sony Computer Enterainment Europe, ο οποίος είχε αναφέρει πως "Δουλειά μου είναι να προσπαθήσω να φέρω το PlayStation 3 στην Ευρώπη ταυτόχρονα με την κυκλοφορία του στην Αμερική και θα κάνω το καλύτερο δυνατό για να συμβεί", οι φήμες για κάτι τέτοιο είχαν αρχίσει να λαμβάνουν ανεξέλεγκτες διαστάσεις. Ο Nick Sharples, είπε πως ο συνάδελφός του "δεν αποκάλυψε τίποτα και πως απλά προσπαθεί να κάνει τη δουλειά του", ενώ η παραδοσιακή γραμμή που ακολουθείται εδώ και χρόνια για τα περισσότερα προϊόντα και όχι μόνο για τις κονσόλες, είναι: "Πρώτα Ιαπωνία, μετά Αμερική και τέλος Ευρώπη". Το σίγουρο είναι πως ο γρίφος που ακούει στο όνομα "PlayStation 3" γίνεται όλο και πιο δύσκολο να λυθεί.

Covering a recent event held in Japan focussed around Dynasty Warriors BB, Vice President of KOEI Kiyoshi Komatsu is said to have told reporters that an important Sony event will be taking place on March 15th. It is believed that more information on the Sony Playstation 3 will be announced which will finally tell us how much longer we have to wait for the next gen console. Sony might also show the PS3 in action at the event. However at the moment there is no word from Sony on this, so all we can do is wait.

Sony announces delay of new PlayStation

Sony on Wednesday announced a delay in the launch of its next-generation PlayStation 3 gaming console, increasing the pressure on video game publishers who have been counting on brisk sales of PS3 titles to help them overcome a weak market for new games this year.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Ken Kutaragi, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, said the PS3 would be available in early November this year, almost six months later than an originally-planned spring launch.

The delay, caused by problems in the copy protection feature of its Blu-Ray technology, also marked a setback for Sony’s next-generation DVD format.

The PS3 is expected to be a major driver of growth for Blu-Ray, which is being backed by Sony and a number of technology and entertainment groups. Toshiba, a rival electronics maker, is later this month expected to launch the first players compatible with HD-DVD, a rival high-definition format.

Mike Goodman, an analyst at Yankee Group, said Sony’s determination to pack the PS3 full of high-tech hardware was costing the company valuable time.

He said further delays would benefit Microsoft, Sony’s chief rival in the gaming console market, which launched its next-generation player, the Xbox 360, in November.

“Every day that goes by, Xbox 360s are selling and Microsoft is ramping up its production,” he said. “You have to question whether Sony is trying to take too big a chunk of the technology apple here.”

In the US, video game sales fell 13 per cent in February, after falling 5 per cent in January compared with the year before, according to NPD, an industry research group.

Sony shares closed 1.8 per cent lower at Y5,470 ahead of the announcement on Wednesday.
