IDT HQV Benchmark 2.0

Many video reviewers use the original HQV Benchmark DVD and Blu-ray test discs in their evaluations of displays, players, and processors, but those discs are getting a bit long in the tooth, and there are a couple of errors on them that limit their usefulness in certain tests. Now, IDT has released version 2.0 of both discs, and they look fantastic. (During the development process, IDT solicited feedback from several reviewers, including Tom Norton and me, and I'm gratified that they actually took our advice.)

As with the previous version, the new discs provide various tests of video processing, including video conversion (3:2 and 2:2 pulldown, response time, etc.), noise and artifact reduction, scaling and enhancements, and adaptive enhancements. New to version 2.0 is a set of images that help users set the basic picture controls, which is a great addition. HQV Benchmark is available now from the HQV website; the DVD is $20 and the Blu-ray is $25.

The MPS-2510P active reference monitors from the rejuvenated MK Sound were sounding good, with their dual 5.25-inch woofers, trio of one-inch silk domes, and onboard dual 180-watt amps, one for the woofers and one for the tweeters. Price $2999. The MX-350 dual 12-inch sub ($2299) has improved 400-watt amps for each driver.

Anthem Goes Blu

The BLX 200 is not only Anthem's first Blu-ray player but its first source component. It includes SACD capability for $799. Also new were two LCOS projectors, the LTX 500V ($8499) and LTX 300V ($5799). The difference between them is that the step-up model has 120Hz refresh and ISF certification

Onkyo Unveils Pre-Pro and Multi-Ch Amp

Onkyo's first foray into separates includes the PR-SC5503 surround preamp-processor ($2699), with the up-to-date feature set you'd expect in an Onkyo receiver, and the PA-MC5500 multi-channel power amp. The amp's got nine channels of 150-watt AB amplification, enough to accommodate both height and width channels, and can connect to the pre-pro via XLR. Both about to ship; pre-pro price may be around $2699. Onkyo also showed the BD-SP807 Blu-ray player which boasts Anchor Bay video processing. (And the company plans to introduce its first -- perhaps anyone's first -- HDMI 1.4 receivers this spring
