Wal-Mart to sell cheap Chinese HD DVD players
In what could prove a significant development in the HD format war, leading cut-price US retailer Wal-Mart has reportedly inked a 100 million dollar deal with Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Corporation to supply two million HD DVD players, which it plans to retail at just 299 dollars.
However one translation of the deal circulated is said to read ‘Blu-ray (or possibly blue light) HD DVD player,’ which commentators say could imply the brand has ordered stocks of Blu-ray players instead. Wal-Mart isn’t clarifying, but the HD DVD camp has made no secret of the fact that it seems low-cost licensed products as key to popularizing the format. At present, no Chinese vendors are known to have licensed Blu-ray technology.
