Wal-Mart to sell cheap Chinese HD DVD players

In what could prove a significant development in the HD format war, leading cut-price US retailer Wal-Mart has reportedly inked a 100 million dollar deal with Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Corporation to supply two million HD DVD players, which it plans to retail at just 299 dollars.
However one translation of the deal circulated is said to read ‘Blu-ray (or possibly blue light) HD DVD player,’ which commentators say could imply the brand has ordered stocks of Blu-ray players instead. Wal-Mart isn’t clarifying, but the HD DVD camp has made no secret of the fact that it seems low-cost licensed products as key to popularizing the format. At present, no Chinese vendors are known to have licensed Blu-ray technology.

"The Chinese manufacturer at the centre of the recent Wal-Mart HD DVD revelation says that the order from the US retailer hasn’t actually been placed yet, and has issued the following statement: ‘We are sorry to correct the statement that we have 2 million HD DVD players order from Wal-Mart and manufactured by China Great Wall Group. The actuality is that we had not received yet. We are asked to provide the schedule to Wal-Mart and cost to determine the quantity even more than 2 million, if the cost is good enough and timing is correct. So the capacity is under consideration. Any qualified manufactured base group will be welcome.‘
Wal-Mart itself has also issued a statement, carefully distancing itself from the original story: ‘Today we sell both Blu-ray and HD DVD in our stores nationwide. As with all new technologies, we are committed to providing the best value on products that customers choose as most relevant to them. With new industry developments, we will make shifts in our selections as customer preferences evolve and they vote with their purchase. We expect that as prices decrease and new elements are added in the coming months that consumers will choose which format will dominate, and that could happen by the end of this year."
