The S200 takes NAD's trademark combination of power, performance, and value in power amplifiers to a new level. Its dual-mono design will produce its rated power with absolute ease -- delivering absolutely stable, defined, musical performance into even the most complex, "unreasonable" speaker loads. It will deliver as much as 470 watts per channel into a 4-ohm load. In bridged mono mode, it will deliver 780 watts of continuous average power (940 watts IHF dynamic power) and 1.3kW of IHF dynamic power into 4 ohms. By any measure, this is an enormously powerful amplifier.
Both the amount and quality of the S200's power begins with its massive Holmgren toroidal power transformer. This low-noise, low-hum device is a considerable advance even over conventional toroidal transformers in both efficiency and freedom from both internal and external radiated hum.
Its input facilities, all gold-plated, provide both the usual, unbalanced RCA connections and "pro-style" fully balanced XLR jacks, which preserve the enhanced dynamic range of the balanced outputs of the S100 preamplifier, for the utmost in signal-transfer integrity.
The very-high-current output stage delivers power by way of current reservoirs that are built up of multiple, smaller-value storage capacitors. This NAD configuration, first introduced in the widely acclaimed 208THX, has a faster recovery time and less total inductance than a single pair of larger capacitors. It yields "fast," high-definition/high-power transient capabilities that provide terrific dynamic integrity. The overall results are musical detail, impact, and soundstage breadth and depth that are unmatched from so affordable a high-power amplifier and many designs two or three times the S200's price.
The S200 offers NAD's proprietary, switchable Soft ClippingTM to reduce the risk of loudspeaker damage from prolonged high-power or inadvertent overdrive operation. It also offers reliable, sonically transparent relay protection from thermal overload, short circuits, and other potentially disastrous conditions.
The most affordable "ultimate" power amplifier on the market, and a superb amplifier by any standard, the new S200 is a potent example of Silver Series design, and a tremendously satisfying way to drive your favorite loudspeakers to their optimum performance capabilities.
