French man gets fine, suspended sentence for his P2P downloads
Bad times for a 55 year old man in Vannes, France, as a court has ruled that he's indeed guilty of illegally downloading copyrighted content. The man was found to have used eMule to download 12,591 music tracks, 426 movies and 16 TV series (in full), and was sentenced to 2 months in jail (suspended though, no worries), in addition to getting a 33,000 Euro fine.
In his defense the file sharer said that the downloads were made in the course of a year, they were for personal use only, and argued that he didn't know he was breaking the law. All the claims were shut down in court although an appeal is likely possible. Overall, it's still better than the $1.92 million fine got by Jammie Thomas-Rasset in the US.
