Edgar Wright offers an update on Ant-Man

Ant-Man is the one Marvel film that has been the most talked about with very little to actually show for it. A script has been written by Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish and everyone at Marvel Studios is reportedly pleased with it. There's a release date (November 6, 2015) and it's scheduled to kick off "Phase 3" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.


Speaking to IGN, director Edgar Wright talked about the hold-up and why he's waited so long to get into it.


“I’ve been collaborating with [Marvel Studios Producer] Kevin [Feige] during the whole of that cycle. I think people have always assumed… ‘Oh why is it taking so long to make?’ Part of it is because I wanted to make two other movies first. I wanted to make World’s End… me and Simon were very keen to make it and it felt like it was unfinished business and we wanted to wrap up the trilogy. The script came together really fast. Well not really fast, but it came together at a certain point where it was like ‘I really want to do this next.’


“But to be honest, the later I do it, it feels like I could learn more, especially about special effects. It’s a big effects movie, so I’m pleased to go into it having done Scott Pilgrim and The World’s End because you’re always learning more about that side.”


Though the film will probably share some connection with The Avengers sequel and the rest of "Phase 3," Wright says the film can stand on its own.


“It’s a way of doing a superhero film within another genre. I wanted to tell an origin tale in a slightly different way. It’s part of the Marvel cinematic universe, but it also feels like its own piece.

Edgar Wright thinks Ant-Man will surprise people

Many fans will attest that they had been waiting their entire lives to see The Avengers together in a single film, but there's one Marvel movie that we've been waiting on for a long time too - Edgar Wright's Ant-Man. We know very little about the film, but with its 2015 release date quickly approaching, it's only a matter of time before we start to hear much more. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Wright elaborated on what he wants to do with the film and how he thinks it will surprise audiences.

"I want to make him into a badass [laughs]. No, I always liked that comic and I always thought it would be an interesting thing to see in live-action. That's why I [showed] that Comic-Con test that we did for Marvel, to show this fight scene like a proof of content, like this is what the action is going to look like. I think a lot of people who maybe don't know the character sort of see that test and go, "Oh, right, I get it. It's like an action film," so that's the idea. I think people will be surprised by what kind of movie it is, and so in that respect it's something that I know is going to stand out because it's got a very different story and is a very different movie."

When asked about the tone of the film, Wright says he thinks it will be in line with the rest of the Marvel films.

"Well, I think the Marvel movies are funny, you know? I think generally the Iron Man films and The Avengers is funny. They're not ever in the comedy section, but they are funny and entertaining, so I think it'll be something in a similar vein to that."

Paul Rudd is Marvel Studios' Ant-Man!

Rumored for the role since earlier this year, Paul Rudd is Marvel Studios' choice to headline Ant-Man! The Wrap reports that the Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues star will play Hank Pym in the July 31, 2015 release.

Although there's no assurance yet that it remains the case, Wright's original plans for the film called for both Pym and the later Ant-Man of the comics, Scott Lang, to appear in the feature.

"The idea that we have for the adaptation is to actually involve both... Henry Pym and Scott Lang," Wright told [SuperHeroHype some years ago. "So you actually do a prologue where you see Pym as Ant-Man in action in the 60's, in sort of 'Tales to Astonish' mode basically, and then the contemporary, sort of flash-forward, is Scott Lang's story, and how he comes to acquire the suit, how he crosses paths with Henry Pym, and then, in an interesting sort of Machiavellian way, teams up with him."

The film, which is supposed to launch "Phase Three" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will follow Avengers: Age of Ultron's May 1, 2015 release.

It's official: Marvel studios confirms Paul Rudd will play Ant-Man

Following yesterday's report, Marvel Studios has now officially confirmed that Paul Rudd will star in director Edgar Wright's Ant-Man. Here's the press release:

Marvel Studios confirmed today that renowned actor Paul Rudd has been cast to star as the title character in Marvel’s Ant-Man. The feature film is being directed by Edgar Wright. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will produce the film with Nira Park.

The casting of Rudd represents the actor that Marvel had long ago identified as its first choice to play Ant-Man, continuing the studio’s desire to cast actors that bring several dimensions to its onscreen heroes. The film’s plot is being kept under wraps.

Rudd brings a diverse background to the role having become one of the industry’s most known actors with a reputation for smart, funny and creative performances. Rudd can currently be seen in Anchor Man 2: The Legend Continues, as well as past roles in Anchorman; This Is 40; I Love You, Man; Role Models; Forgetting Sarah Marshall; Our Idiot Brother; Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin among numerous other films, television shows and primetime animation.

"When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star," said Marvel's Kevin Feige. "We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we'd ever met with about doing the work, we knew we'd found the right guy. We couldn't be more excited for our audiences to see what he's going to do to bring Ant-Man to life."

Edgar Wright teases the Ant-Man plot




Ant-Man director Edgar Wright took to his blog this morning and simply posted he was doing "homework." In his post, he also included an image (shown below) from the animated series Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes episode "To Steal an Ant-Man." This particular episode is based on "Marvel Premiere #47," and features future Ant-Man Scott Lang stealing original Ant-Man Hank Pym's equipment and using it to commit crimes.

Wright told SuperHeroHype many years ago that "The idea that we have for the adaptation is to actually involve both... Henry Pym and Scott Lang," and with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously calling Wright's Ant-Man movie a "heist film," it seems likely that we might be seeing something similar on the big screen in 2015.

The big question that this brings up for the film is who will star Paul Rudd be playing? Previous reports pointed toward him as Hank Pym, but when Marvel Studios officially confirmed the actor in the role they made no mention of which particular Ant-Man he would be playing. Michael Douglas cast as Ant-Man!

Fresh from last night's Golden Globe win for his performance in Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra, Michael Douglas has joined the cast of Marvel Studios' Ant-Man in the role of Hank Pym! Douglas will star opposite Paul Rudd (now confirmed to be playing Scott Lang) in the Edgar Wright film, set for release on July 31, 2015.

"With Hank Pym's rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves," said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. "We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn't be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life."

Set to begin production shortly in Georgia, Ant-Man will be directed by Wright, who co-wrote the script with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block).

Michael Douglas talks about what drew him to Ant-Man

Yesterday came the surprise announcement that two-time Academy Award winner Michael Douglas will play Hank Pym in the upcoming Ant-Man feature film. Now in an interview with Reuters, Douglas spoke about what drew him to the project:

"I've been dying to do a Marvel picture for so long. The script is really fun, the director is really good. Dylan (the actor's 13-year-old son) will love it. He'll have a picture he can see."

Fresh off the heels of his Golden Globe victory for Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra, Douglas also said that he wants to surprise the studios and audiences alike with Ant-Man.

"Sometimes - like (when) they didn't see you for Liberace - you've got to shake them up a little bit and have some fun."

Gravity composer Steven Price boards Marvel Studios' Ant-Man

Edgar Wright took to Twitter moments ago to reveal that Gravity composer Steven Price is set to score his upcoming Marvel Studios Phase Three launcher, Ant-Man.

"Huge congrats to @SteveBPrice for his Bafta Award for the 'Gravity' score," Wright says. "I guess I should drop the news that he is scoring 'Ant-Man'."

Patrick Wilson joins Marvel Studios' Ant-Man

Patrick Wilson is the latest addition to the cast of Marvel Studios' Ant-Man. Deadline has the news, claiming that the The Conjuring star will join Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas for the July 17, 2015 release. Evangeline Lilly and Michael Pena are also nearly set to join the cast, although neither has been locked at this time.

Wilson's role is, for the time being, a mystery. He's no stranger to comic book films, however. He played Nite Owl in Watchmen, the 2009 feature adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' epochal work from the Distinguished Competition.

Ant-Man targets Corey Stoll for mystery role

Edgar Wright's Ant-Man has targeted "House of Cards" star Corey Stoll for a mystery role in the upcoming Marvel Studios film, Variety reports. He'll join Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas for the July 17, 2015 release with Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena and Patrick Wilson also still in talks to form the cast.

BREAKING: Edgar Wright departs Marvel Studios' Ant-Man

In a surprise announcement, Marvel Studios and Edgar Wright have revealed that Wright has departed Ant-Man. The official statement on the matter reads as follows:

Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on Ant-Man due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.

Breaking: Ant-Man gets a director... and a new writer!

It looks like the not-so-long journey to get a new director for Marvel Studios' Ant-Man has finally come to a close and the job has gone to ...

Peyton Reed! (who was just announced as a frontrunner yesterday)

Marvel.com broke the news just moments ago, but not only do they have a director but one of the previous people mentioned as a possibility to direct, Anchorman co-writer and director Adam McKay, has been hired to "contribute" to the existing script by Wright and co-writer Joe Cornish, presumably to get it into shape to start production next month as planned.

As a reminder, Reed was once going to be directing Fox's Fantastic Four movie back in 2002 before Tim Story came onboard, so he clearly has had interest in tackling superheroes for a while. McKay has been developing a movie based on Garth Ennis and Darrick Robertson's edgy superhero comic, The Boys. They've both been the men behind the lens for a number of comedies that have grossed over $100 million domestically.

'Joker Thug' David Dastmalchian joins the cast of Ant-Man

Deadline reports that The Dark Knight actor David Dastmalchian has joined the cast of Ant-Man in an unspecified role. Dastmalchian is most well known for playing one of the many "Joker Thugs" in the 2008 Christopher Nolan film but also last year's Prisoners, in which he played a suspect in a child abduction opposite Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman.

Marvel's Ant-Man officially begins filming!

It's been a long and complicated journey for Marvel's Ant-Man, having been in development since 2006, losing director Edgar Wright, finding another in Peyton Reed, losing actors in pivotal roles, and all the while going through various script re-writes. Today, however, things are looking up, as Reed revealed on Twitter this morning that the film officially begins filming today! You can read his full tweet below.
