3D Audio (Perspectives on Music Production) 1st Edition
Και ξεκινάω με τη πρόσφατη μελέτη.
1) A new journal paper "Subjective evaluations of three-dimensional, surround and stereo loudspeaker reproductions using classical music recordings" by Callum Eaton and Hyunkook Lee, has been published in Acoustical Science and Technology. It's Open Access, available from https://doi.org/10.1250/ast.43.149
The paper investigated how perceived qualities degrade when downmixing original 3D recording of 22.2 to 9.1, 5.1 and stereo. This paper shows that downmix quality of 3D classical recordings significantly depend on microphone techniques and 5.1 can be as good as 9.1 depending on the technique used. Another interesting finding was that Overall Listening Experience (OLE) was strongly associated with Listener Envelopment (LEV), whereas Presence (sense of being there) was most related to Overall Tonal Quality (OTQ). When discussing Presence in immersive audio, we may be often obsessed with spatial aspects, but our results suggest maintaining a good tonal quality (e.g. free from comb-filtering when downmixing) would ensure a higher sense of being there too.
2) A new paper that we collaborated on with Dr Slawek Zielinski and Pawel Antoniuk of Bialystok University has been published on EURASIP Journal of Audio, Speech and Music Processing. The paper is about the use of machine learning for binaural front/back scene detection, comparison between various feature engineering methods exploiting psychoacoustic models and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) approach. Open access.
Automatic discrimination between front and back ensemble locations in HRTF-convolved binaural recordings of music - EURASIP Journal on Audio, Speech, and Music Processing
One of the greatest challenges in the development of binaural machine audition systems is the disambiguation between front and back audio sources, particularly in complex spatial audio scenes. The goal of this work was to develop a method for discriminating between front and back located...

3) Two papers we presented at the Immersive and 3D Audio conference (I3DA) in Sep are now available on IEEE Explore.

2. Pawlak, Lee, Makivirta and Lund, "Subjective Evaluation of Spatial Analysis and Synthesis Methods Using Different Microphone Arrays"
Subjective evaluation of spatial analysis and synthesis methods using different microphone arrays
Multiple spatial analysis and synthesis methods were proposed up to this date, however, there is still a lack of scientific evidence to conclude how proposed methods and measurement setups compare to each other. This paper presents a subjective study that investigates how spatial analysis and...
