In my small tests there is certainly a difference in FW cables
but the results put me into a $17 cable, not a $1700 one.
I think we've found that removing power via some modding or a 4 pin cable (with adapter back to 6 pin or whatever you need) is a consistent winner...as are GoldX cables for a few of us. Also, like USB, it seems evident that length is paramount, and I don't mean "stay under 4.5M" (which is max length for single cable). I mean, stay under 2M if you can. But so far no one has claimed that a mega-dollar FW cable is king (other than king of quality construction, as is the Oyaide). I'm hoping it stays that way, but if new heights are found, oh well..it's time to pay up.
P.S. I found the Goldx 6-to-4 (with 4-to-6 adapter) to be significantly more detailed and more solid across the freq spectrum than the Belkin cables. All these comparos were done with the Weiss DAC2 and/or the Metric Halo LIO-8. YMMV.
