Giant plasma screens face EU ban
It's the police...hide the telly...
That large screen TV in the corner of your living room could soon be banned under plans being drawn up by European governments.
According to the Independent , 'minimum energy performance standards' will be implemented in 2009, which will effectively kill off 'inefficient TVs'. And by that, they mean giant plasma TVs, described as 'the 4x4s of the living room' for consuming four times as much energy as traditional TVs. But don't worry, already owning one isn't likely to get you arrested.
Power consumption obviously goes up as the screens increase in size and according to the Energy Savings Trust, a big-screen plasma knocks out twice the emissions of a fridge freezer. In fact, if the new regulations are passed, you'll know exactly how (in)efficient your TV is by the mandatory labels each one will feature, allowing you to find the greenest model at a glance.
In the meantime, enjoy your big plasma while you can - it will soon be an endangered species.
