The European Union (EU) is likely to place tariffs of more than 20% on flat-panel TVs exported to Europe, according to Liu Hai Zhong (transliterated from Chinese), spokesperson for Sichuan Changhong Electronics, as quoted by the China-based web portal Sohu.
Currently, the EU puts a 14% tariff on imported flat-panel TVs and LCD monitors with a DVI interface. However, according to sources at Taiwan LCD-monitor makers, the tariff can be partially circumvented by first shipping the components to Europe and then assembling the products there.
Sohu also reported that the EU has imposed an import quota on China-based CRT TVs, whereby a 44.6% tariff will be imposed on CRT TVs imported from China once the total exceeds 400,000 units, the website stated.
