Jason Clarke boards Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Zero Dark Thirty star Jason Clarke has signed on to star in the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the Matt Reeves-directed followup to 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The news arrives courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter and the article also makes note of a few minor plot details.


Dawn, the outlet reports, is set 15 years after the events of Rise and finds most of humanity wiped out and the intelligent apes ruling over the world. Part of the film's focus is said to be on a small group of San Francisco-based scientists that are forming a resistance against the apes and part follows Andy Serkis' Caesar as he, like his namesake, tries to maintain order and power within his new civilization.

Gary Oldman boards Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Things are really ramping up for Matt Reeves' upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. In addition to the returning Andy Serkis, recent reports name Jason Clarke and Kodi Smit-McPhee as two of the sequel's principal cast. Now, Gary Oldman will be boarding the project as the leader of a human colony!

A name very well known to cinephiles, Oldman recently starred in John Hillcoat's Lawless and reprised his role as Commissioner Gordon in last summer's The Dark Knight Rises. He can be seen later this year in Robert Luketic's Paranoia and early next year in Jose Padilha's RoboCop.

Judy Greer goes ape for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Vulture recently talked to actress Judy Greer--best known for her role as Kitty on "Arrested Development" and movies like Alexander Payne's The Descendants--and she gave them the scoop that she will be joining Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, portraying Cornelia, the chimp previously played by Devyn Dalton in the original Rise of the Planet of the Apes.


"Dawn" is the sequel to the blockbuster Rise of the Planet of the Apes with Cloverfield director Matt Reeves taking over the helming duties and Andy Serkis returning in the performance-capture role of Caesar, joined by Jason Clarke, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Gary Oldman and Keri Russell.


"It's a very different kind of work than I'm used to," she told them. "I'm not going to be wearing Manolo Blahniks in this one,". According to the story, Greer met with Reeves for the role of Cornelia after being encouraged by her 13 Going on 30 co-star (and "Rise" star) Andy Serkis.


Apparently, Greer's love for the "Planet of the Apes" movies may go far beyond any of the fans waiting to see the sequel, since apparently, even her wedding included a number of "Apes" references. "We had a chimp husband-and-wife cake topper at our wedding. At the cocktail hour, we played 'Planet of the Apes' and 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' on two separate televisions in the bar area. And on the wedding gift I bought him, a vintage Rolex, I had it engraved, 'Ape shall not kill ape.' I was then told that, technically, it's 'Ape shall never kill ape,' but there wasn't enough space for engraving purposes."

Caeser rides a horse in new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes set photo




Shooting has officially commenced on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the film's director, Matt Reeves, has revealed a new image from the New Orleans set. Featuring Andy Serkis in his motion capture suit, as Caeser on a horse, it would appear he's stumbled upon some humans. Check it out below!

Michael Giacchino to score Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Composer Michael Giacchino (Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Star Trek) has just revealed through his Twitter feed that he'll be providing the score for Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

More set photos from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes




Production is currently in New Orleans where they've set up an overgrown San Francisco on one of the streets. One of their sources got them quite a few photos previously and today they've provided them with a few more, including some surprises.


If you look at the pictures closely, you'll see a few more San Francisco indicators such as a banner for the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and a broken down cable car. The most interesting thing about the photos though is the graffiti on one of the buildings. The original image is that of a human face with the words "Human Nation" on the top and bottom, and as you can see a chimpanzee skull (with a biohazard symbol) have been painted over it. Could this provide some clues about the human resistance still alive in the film?

To mark the one year until the release of the film, 20th Century Fox has just revealed an online prequel comic that will bridge the gap between 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes and next summer's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. No word on if this will stay as an online comic or whether it will be published in a physical format at a later date, but you can visit the website at Apes2014.com and see the pages yourself, or check out a few of them below.
