Marvel’s "Doctor Strange" follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Scott Derrickson to direct Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange!




Marvel Studios has found its Doctor Strange director! Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose helmer Scott Derrickson will take on the master of the mystic arts.

"[Doctor Strange] checks the box off this criteria that I have," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told SuperHeroHype recently about the long-gestating feature. "He’s totally different from anything else we have."

Although a specific release date for Doctor Strange has not yet been set, Marvel has two placeholder dates set for unnamed features on July 8, 2016 and on May 5, 2017. It's looking more and more likely that the good doctor will be claiming one of those spots.

Derrickson's other directing credits include the 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still and the upcoming Deliver Us From Evil, hitting theaters July 2. He shared the news of his involvement with Doctor Strange with the below Tweet:

Marvel in final negotiations to shoot Doctor Strange in England

Screen Daily reports that Marvel's next big venture, Doctor Strange, is in final negotations to shoot at Pinewood-Shepperton in the UK, the home for this year's colossal hit Guardians of the Galaxy as well as next year's release, Avengers: Age of Ultron. The outlet mentions that preparations are being made to assemble the crew in late 2014/early 2015 with an eye to officially start production in May 2015.

Though no official release date has been set for the film, as some other outlets are reporting, this time table for production would lead one to believe that Doctor Strange will land on the July 8, 2016 release date that Marvel previously set, but this has not been confirmed. Benedict Cumberbatch is Marvel's Doctor Strange!

Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of "Sherlock," The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and the upcoming The Imitation Game, has, according to Deadline, taken the leading role in Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange!

Doctor Strange is based on the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, who made his first appearance in 1963's "Strange Tales" #110. It follows the adventures of Stephen Strange (nodded at in this year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier), a brilliant neurosurgeon who, following a car accident, loses precision in his hands. His quest to regain his former skills sets Strange on a path to become the "Master of the Mystic Arts."

Although no official release date has been set for the film, the time table for production would lead one to believe that Doctor Strange will land on the July 8, 2016 release date that Marvel has already bookmarked for a theatrical release.

Marvel confirms Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange!

Marvel Studios has just officially announced that, as has been long suspected, Benedict Cumberbatch will headline director Scott Derickson’s Marvel Studios Phase Three film, Doctor Strange!

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” says Producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

Cumberbatch, who is in theaters now in the Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game, is likely best known as the star of the BBC’s contemporary Sir Arthur Conan Doyle adaptation, “Sherlock.” He stars on the show (which is soon to begin production on its fourth season) opposite Martin Freeman, with whom he also stars in this month’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Cumberbatch can also be seen coming up in director Scott Cooper’s Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass. There, he stars opposite Johnny Depp and Joel Edgerton.

Benedict Cumberbatch opens up about Doctor Strange

One month ago, Marvel Studios confirmed the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch for Doctor Strange and though the film won’t hit theaters until November 2016, the actor is already preparing for his appearance as the Sorcerer Supreme. Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Cumberbatch was asked if taking on this part was a risk, to which he replied:

“I don’t think it’s a risk because of Marvel. Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary comic characters and turning them into screen-like gods. It’s very different, it’s an Astral Plane. There’s a huge new element to this Marvel universe that’s going to be employed in building this story and this character. But you know, I’m really excited about it, about working with Scott [Derrickson] whose imagination is endless, and all the boys and girls at Marvel who know what they’re doing. I’ve got a few things to get under my belt first.”

When asked if he would be heading out to the Himalayas to film for the movie, a place Cumberbatch is no stranger to in reality, the actor said:

“Ahh … you’ll have to wait and see. I’m not going to be eked out on any spoilers or reveals now. It’s quite a way off but I’m very excited about that spiritual dimension, obviously. It’s something that’s been a huge part of my life.”

Cumberbatch was also asked if he had read the Doctor Strange comics while growing up, and though he revealed he hadn’t, the actor confirmed that “You can bet your bottom dollar I’m reading them now, avidly.”

Chiwetel Ejiofor to play Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange

According to Deadline, the character that Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor is rumored to play opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel Studios’ forthcoming Doctor Strange is none other than the Master of the Mystic Arts’ arch enemy, Baron Mordo!

When Baron Karl Amadeus Mordo first appeared in Marvel Comics’ “Strange Tales” #111 (Doctor Strange’s second issue), he was a treacherous student of Tibetan sorcerer The Ancient One. The Baron’s planned betrayal was one of the catalysts for Stephen Strange to devote his life to magic, and after Mordo’s exile, he has frequently used black magic and invoked demons against Strange, two big no-no’s for the good Doctor.

It is stated that Ejiofor’s Mordo will not be totally evil in the film, but rather an amalgamation of several characters in the Strange canon, which points to him possibly beginning as an ally and gradually turning to evil. Tilda Swinton has signed to play The Ancient One, and it should also be noted that Ejiofor has displayed excellent fighting prowess in both Serenity and Redbelt, the latter of which he learned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for.

Mads Mikkelsen up for mystery role in Doctor Strange

Although “Hannibal” has just one episode left, leading man Mads Mikkelsen’s future is looking awfully bright. Not only will he star in Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Star Wars entry, Rogue One, but Variety is now reporting that Mads Mikkelsen is also in talks to play a mystery villain role in Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange!

Whoever he’s playing, Mads Mikkelsen won’t be the only villain in the Scott Derrickson film. It was revealed back in June that Chiwetel Ejiofor will be playing the good doctor’s arch foe, Baron Mordo. Despite Mordo’s villainous role in the comics, it was said when Eijofor’s casting was announced that the cinematic version will serve as an amalgamation of several characters in the Strange canon. It’s likely that we’ll first see Mordo an ally.

This isn’t the first time that Marvel has looked to Mads Mikkelsen to play a comic book villain. Back in 2012, Mikkelsen was up for the role of Malekith in Thor: The Dark World. The part ultimate went to “Doctor Who” star Christopher Eccleston.

Rachel McAdams confirmed to star in Marvel’s Doctor Strange

TheWrap brings word directly from the Toronto International Film Festival where Mean Girls and “True Detective” star Rachel McAdams has confirmed she will star in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. McAdams was previously unsure of her involvement saying she didn’t know if talks would “go anywhere at all.” It’s still unclear what role McAdams will play in the film.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange adds A Serious Man with Michael Stuhlbarg

The Hollywood Reporter brings word about another casting addition to Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange feature film with actor Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, “Boardwalk Empire”). Variety adds on that Stuhlbarg will play the role of Doctor Nicodemus West, the character who fixed Strange’s hands and even follows him to Kamar-Taj and undergoes his own mystical training.

Camera’s are rolling for Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange, and the first stop in the film’s production cycle is Nepal, where the first photo from the set (via CBM) reveals a haggard Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character! In the context of the film, the good Doctor is likely seeking mystical help to overcome his affliction which will lead to his meeting with The Ancient One. Check out the image below!

First photo of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo on the set of Doctor Strange

Yesterday, a video from the set of Marvel’s Doctor Strange popped up online, featuring not only star Benedict Cumberbatch but a mysterious hooded figure walking around in the shots as well. Now, new set photos have debuted online at The Kathmandu Post (via CBM) revealing that the hooded figure in question was Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo and giving us out first look at the Academy Award nominee on the set. Following word yesterday regarding the film’s addition of “Transparent” star Amy Landecker, TheWrap is reporting that Marvel‘s “Phase Three” feature Doctor Strange has also added actor and martial artist Scott Adkins to its cast. As was the case with Landecker, Scott Adkins’ role has not yet been revealed.

Doctor Strange photo: Benedict Cumberbatch as the Marvel superhero

Marvel Studios has released (via EW) a first-look Doctor Strange photo featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the superhero. The magazine’s cover shoot with Cumberbatch was one of the very first times the actor tried on the costume and he used the shoot as something of a research-and-development session for the gesticulations which are part of his character’s spell-casting.

“I’m still in the infancy of learning all that,” Cumberbatch said. “It was like, okay, I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically. I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there. And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet. I felt really self-conscious. But, then, by the end, it was great. It’s like anything, you just have to experiment.”

Marvel casts Benedict Wong in Doctor Strange

Marvel Studios has found its Wong. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that the currently-filming Doctor Strange is doubling down on Benedicts, casting The Martian star Benedict Wong as Strange’s faithful manservant, also known as Wong.
