Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne ("The Theory of Everything") stars once more as wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander; alongside Katherine Waterston as Auror Tina Goldstein; Alison Sudol as her sister, Queenie Goldstein; and Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, the only No-Maj in the foursome.

Oscar nominee Johnny Depp (the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, "Finding Neverland"), who was revealed as Gellert Grindelwald, stars as the powerful Dark wizard in the film. Oscar nominee Jude Law ("The Talented Mr. Ripley," "Cold Mountain") takes on the role of Albus Dumbledore—one of J.K. Rowling’s most beloved characters—decades before he becomes Headmaster at Hogwarts. Credence, whose fate was unknown at the end of the first film, makes a mysterious return, played again by Ezra Miller. Zoë Kravitz plays Leta Lestrange, who was glimpsed in a photo as a woman from Newt’s past; Callum Turner is the famed Theseus Scamander, a war hero and Auror, who also happens to be Newt’s older brother; and Claudia Kim plays a young woman we first meet as a featured attraction at a wizarding circus.

J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens in 1927, a few months after Newt helped to unveil and capture the infamous Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. However, as he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore. But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina, Queenie and Jacob, but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.

The film expands the wizarding world, moving from New York to London and on to Paris. There are also some surprising nods to the Harry Potter stories that will delight fans of the books and film series.

David Yates talks Fantastic Beasts sequel script

We knew before the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film even began production that Warner Bros. was eager for it to become a series, because they set release dates for three films. Now, though the first film doesn’t open in theaters for another four months, director David Yates is already opening up about the film’s sequel.

“We’ve seen the script for Part 2, for the second movie, which takes the story in a whole new direction – as you should, you don’t want to repeat yourself,” Yates tells EW. “The second movie introduces new characters as she builds this part of the Harry Potter universe further. It’s a very interesting development from where we start out. The work is pouring out of her.”

The Fantastic Beasts sequel is currently set for release on November 16, 2018. You can check out a new photo from the first film in the below!

Johnny Depp joins Fantastic Beasts 2!

Although the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them won’t hit theaters until later this month, Deadline today brings word of a major development on the Fantastic Beasts 2 front. According to the outlet, Johnny Depp is set to join the sequel’s cast opposite the returning Eddie Redmayne. There’s no word yet on who Depp might be playing in J.K. Rowling‘s Wizarding World, but the original article suggests that we might even catch an early glimpse of his character when the new Warner Bros. Pictures film arrives in theaters November 18.

Johnny Depp is Grindelwald, Dumbledore returns and more on the Fantastic Beasts sequels

While Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them doesn’t hit theaters until Friday, November 18, director David Yates and producer David Heyman have already talked quite a bit about the upcoming sequel. Just last week, we learned that Johnny Depp had joined the cast of the Fantastic Beasts sequel. Now we know, as many fans had already guessed, that Johnny Depp is Grindelwald.

Heyman told The Leaky Cauldron about Depp filming scenes for the franchise. “We filmed early. I was amazed. It was completely bonkers. I was convinced it [would be leaked] you can keep very few secrets nowadays, especially something like that! When he came to Leavesden and we filmed for two days…and it didn’t come out. That’s mad.”

Yates explained why they chose Depp: “The whole principal of casting the movie was go with the best actor. Go for the most inspired, interesting, right fit for that character. And as we approached Grindelwald we thought, ‘who’s going to take this in an interesting direction?’ In this business, it’s a weird old business. You’re brilliant one week, people are saying odd things the next, you go up and down. But no one takes away your pure talent.

“Johnny Depp is a real artist. He’s created several characters who have really resonated in our popular culture. He’s a really brilliant, brilliant actor. We were excited about seeing what he would do with this guy, the character. He’s fearless; he’s imaginative; he’s ambitious. We thought he would do something fun and special. So we went for him, purely on that selfish basis. We don’t care if he’s famous or not famous. We just know he’s interesting.”

David Heyman added. “Grindelwald is an iconic character, so it was important to have someone who had that weight. There’s a reason why he has that weight. It’s because, you know, he’s a fine actor who makes unexpected choices.”

Yates also confirmed that Dumbledore will be back in the sequel. “In the second movie Dumbledore comes back… no it’s not going to be Michael Gambon. No, we need a younger Dumbledore.”

As far as the setting, the Fantastic Beasts sequel will be going back to Europe and will take place in the U.K. and Paris. “We confirm it! We do go back to the U.K. in the second film as well–it’s U.K. and Paris. I’m not sure where Jo is setting the rest of the movies, but they’ll be European-centric. I think it will be difficult to ignore America, but the next one is predominately Europe.”

With the franchise starting off with the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” title, the site asked if the Beasts will be taking a back seat in future movies. Yates said yes, “currently the beasts feature slightly less in the second film, and Grindelwald takes more of a foreground. Currently. But we love the beasts so much. There’s an amazing beast in the second movie–a Chinese beast, actually–that is featured. We’re exploring how we can get a couple more beasts into the second film, with Jo.”

Heyman had a more philosophical answer. “In a way the beasts are the creatures in the case. But it’s also the beast in each of us. […] I think beasts will continue to play a part in some score. It’s also so much a part of what Jo writes about. It’s the consequences of repression.”

Young Dumbledore to be played by Jude Law in Fantastic Beasts 2!

As fans across the globe eagerly await the next adventure in the Fantastic Beasts feature film series, Warner Bros. Pictures has announced the actor who will take on the role of young Dumbledore, one of J.K. Rowling’s most beloved characters. Two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law has been set to star as Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts sequel, it was announced today by Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Callum Turner to play Newt Scamander’s brother in Fantastic Beasts 2

According to Variety, Warner Bros. Pictures has cast hot young British actor Callum Turner (Green Room, Assassin’s Creed) as Newt Scamander’s brother in Fantastic Beasts 2! Eddie Redmayne will return as Scamander, with Jude Law playing a young Dumbledore and Johnny Depp returning as the villain Grindelwald in the Paris-set sequel.
