Hugh Jackman negotiating for villain role in Joe Wright's Pan

The casting for Joe Wright's take on the Peter Pan origin story, called simply Pan, has been coming together to start filming soon for its summer 2015 release date. The first major bit of casting news is that actor Hugh Jackman (Prisoners, The Wolverine) is in talks to play the villainous pirate Blackbeard, who will play the antagonist role normally filled by Captain Hook.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. had originally gone to Javier Bardem to play the role of Blackbeard but when he passed they went to the actor who had gotten critical praise for his performance in their thriller Prisoners earlier this year. Jackman seems to be very interested in playing a straight-on antagonist as opposed to the anti-heroes he's been playing in recent years, having already eyed a similar role in Warner Bros.' The Incredible Mr. Limpet remake.

Blackbeard is an interesting choice of villain since that's actually the name of a real pirate who plagued the high seas during the early 1700s, the nickname of one Edward Teach, and he recently appeared on film in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as played by Ian McShane.

Garrett Hedlund will play Hook in Joe Wright's Pan

Casting is starting to come together for Joe (Atonement) Wright's reinvention of the J.M. Barrie classic Pan, already scheduled for release by Warner Bros. on June 16, 2015.

The lead role of Hook in the movie has been one of the parts many actors have been chasing with a number of familiar names in the mix, but according to Deadline, that role is going to Garrett Hedlund, star of Disney's TRON: Legacy.

The 29-year-old actor has been diversifying since playing Sam Flynn in the 2010 Disney sequel, appearing in the adaptation of Jack Kerouac's On the Road and in the Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis, but his role in Pan will bring Hedlund back to the tentpole leading man status he garnered from TRON: Legacy.

Other names that were in the mix for the role included "Boardwalk Empire's" Jack Huston and Ezra Miller from The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Hugh Jackman officially set for Joe Wright's Peter Pan project

Following rumors of the actor's involvement with the project late last year, Warner Bros. Pictures has today officially confirmed that Hugh Jackman will play the villain, the pirate Blackbeard, in Joe Wright's upcoming untitled Peter Pan film. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Jackman will portray the villainous Blackbeard in an all-new tale about author J.M. Barrie's beloved character Peter Pan, the boy who would never grow up.

Silverman stated, "Hugh Jackman always delivers indelible performances that resonate with audiences. We know he will create a Blackbeard who will be a powerful presence in this original Peter Pan adventure."

Kroll added, "There is a reason that Hugh is known and loved the world over. He is uncompromising in his dedication to every role, and we are all thrilled to be working with him again."

Wright will direct the as-yet-untitled Peter Pan adventure from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs. Greg Berlanti and Paul Webster are serving as producers.

The film is set for a worldwide release on July 17, 2015, opening opposite Marvel Studios' Ant-Man.

Rooney Mara cast as Tiger Lily in Joe Wright's Pan

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Social Network star Rooney Mara has joined the cast of Joe Wright's upcoming Pan in the role of Tiger Lily, Variety reports. She joins the previously-announced Garrett Hedlund and Hugh Jackman.

The all-new tale about author J.M. Barrie's beloved character Peter Pan, the boy who would never grow up, is set during World War II and follows Peter, a young orphan, who is kidnapped by pirates and taken away to Neverland.

Tiger Lily, in the original book, is princess of a tribe of Native Americans living in Neverland. In many adaptations, she serves as a love interest for Peter.

Amanda Seyfried boards Joe Wright's Pan

Amanda Seyfried rounds out the cast as Mary, alongside Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard; Garrett Hedlund as Hook, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, Adeel Akhtar as Smee, and newcomer Levi Miller as Peter.

Principal photography will begin April 28 on Warner Bros. Pictures' live-action Peter Pan feature from director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice).

First look at Hugh Jackman and Levi Miller in Pan

Entertainment Weekly has our first look at Hugh Jackman as the dreaded pirate in Joe Wright’s Pan, although he is NOT Captain Hook, but rather Blackbeard. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Pictures has also released the first official character poster of Levi Miller in the title role and Jackman himself has shared his character’s poster. Check out the images below!

Wright (Anna Karenina, Hanna) has twisted the J.M. Barrie mythos so it is now Blackbeard captaining a flying ship which abducts wartime orphans, including Peter (Miller), while Captain Hook (Garrett Hedlund) is described as “a dashing Indiana Jones-like figure.”

“This isn’t exactly the Neverland story you know,” says Wright.
