Panasonic extends life of 1080p plasma

Panasonic says its upcoming 1080p plasma screens will offer significantly longer life-spans than its competitors. The company says it has extended the phosphor ‘half-life’ of its screens to 100,000 hours, up from 60,000. This means that a TV watched six hours a day would take over 45 years to dim to half its original brightness.
However, the new models lack the ability to accept a 1080p 24Hz signal from Blu-ray or HD DVD sources; having a 1080/24 mode is rapidly becoming a hot button at retail. The company says that it’s looking at the technology but believes there’s no significant issue with picture judder caused by traditional 3:2 pulldown techniques on its sets. The long-life range will debut at the IFA tech show in Berlin August 31.
