Viewers overwhelming prefer the image of plasma compared with LCD. That’s the findings of independent research group Synovate which conducted a comparison test with 344 Australian consumers. The research, funded by Panasonic (which claims neutrality because it supplies both technologies), mirrors a similar survey conducted last year in Europe.
Apparently 69 per cent preferred the overall image of plasma when compared to the same sized LCD TV. Black level, motion clarity and contrast were all seen as key differentiators.
Findings reveal:7 out of 10 consumers thought that plasma had the more natural colour reproduction; four times as many viewers felt plasma displayed black more faithfully than LCD; twice as many preferred plasma when viewing fast-moving images; and 66 per cent thought plasma had better contrast.
Dean Harris, Group Managing Director, Synovate, says: “With a robust sample size that allowed us to provide a relevant snapshotof general trends in the Australian market, the survey elicited some meaningful and interesting results from consumers.”
The Australian results correspond closely to similar Synovate surveys carried out elsewhere: in France, 69 per cent of respondents preferred Plasma, in the UK it was 70 per cent, and in Germany 80 per cent. The testing conditions were designed to simulate indirect lighting, as might be experienced in the evening in the typical home environment. “It’s important that consumers are aware of lighting conditions when they go to purchase a new TV. Most electronics stores have very bright fluorescent lights, meaning a plasma will look different in these conditions compared to their home environment,” said Harris.
