On October 6, 1953, RCA Victor made its first experimental ‘°binaural‘± recordings. By March of 1954, their first forays into the world of stereo were employed at Chicago‘―s Orchestra Hall. Their 1st two-channel recordings were made using a proprietary RCA ¨ω‘± 30ips tape machine and their first three-track recordings were made using tube amp driven Ampex 300-3 ¨φ‘± tape decks (first at 15ips and eventually 30ips) mixed down to ¨ω‘± two-track masters. The favored mics were Neumann U-47 cardioids and M-49/50 omni‘―s. No equalization was used in the original tracking; mics were summed through passive electronics and printed directly to tape.
