First official image from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Yesterday, one of the weirdest things happened when an image from the third The Hobbit film was released before an image from the second film had ever been released. This has now been remedied as the first image from the second film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is now online (via EW).

Fans of the book will recognize what is going on in this image and it will no doubt bring up the question: "If this happens in the second film, what's left for the third?" The third film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is said to draw from the over one hundred pages of appendices written by Tolkien that include what happens afterward.

"The dragon is a huge, wonderful, amazing part of the story, but it doesn’t end there," said writer/producer Philippa Boyens. "Everyone can suspect there's a rather large battle in film three."

The Hobbit resumes production in New Zealand




The final weeks of production on the last two parts of Peter Jackson's new Middle-earth trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, has officially begun in New Zealand. Jackson himself posted the following message on his Facebook page along with a behind-the-scenes photo that shows him with Ian McKellen's Gandalf the Grey.


Back on set for our last Hobbit pick ups. Our last ever Tolkien pick ups, in fact. It's going to be an intense few weeks, but we're looking forward to shooting some powerful scenes with our great cast. Our next blog is coming soon!


The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters on December 13 of this year while The Hobbit: There and Back Again concludes Jackson's second J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy on December 17, 2014.

Evangeline Lilly on playing Tauriel in The Hobbit

Total Film chatted with Evangeline Lilly about playing the Elf Tauriel in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.


"She's a very, very young elf," Lilly said. "She's only 600 years old, unlike Legolas who's like, 1,900 years old and Thranduil who's about 3,000 years old. She doesn't have quite the wisdom and pose that those two boys do; she's a little more... gritty. A little more spontaneous, passionate perhaps."


She added, "To play this character I need to have a certain amount of grace. But I'm also supposed to be an absolutely ruthless, deadly killer."

New image of Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug




We've previously seen an image of Evangeline Lilly as the Elf Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, but it wasn't as amazing as this one. EW spoke with the actress about the film and debuted the new image, which you can see below.


“Tauriel is the head of the Elven Guard,” Lilly said. “She’s a Sylvan Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She doesn’t hold the same kind of status that Arwen or Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do — she’s much more lowly. She sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit.”


Lilly also teased a love story for he character in the film, "She will definitely have a love story. I can’t give away too much about it. It’s not a huge focus but it is there and it is important and it does drive Tauriel and her story and her actions.”


When asked if this love story would involve fan favorite Orlando Bloom's Legolas, she replied: "Tauriel’s relationship with Legolas is significant. They’ve known each other since they were children, and Legolas’ dad, [Elven king] Thrandruil, has a soft spot for Tauriel and sees something very special in her. So if you grow up side by side, and your dad has a very special spot in his heart for this young woman who’s a fantastic warrior, I think it’s hard not to notice her. That’s probably as much as I can say.

Sir Ian McKellen completes filming The Hobbit




While it's not exactly news, it surely is a momentous occasion. Sir Ian McKellen just finished filming scenes as Gandalf for "The Hobbit" films as Peter Jackson just posted the following with this picture:


"Seconds ago we finished our last shot with Gandalf. The end of an incredible adventure that began in 1999. I'm feeling very sad right now."


We'll get to see McKellen as Gandalf two more times, this December in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and in December of 2014 in The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

Orlando Bloom also finishes filming The Hobbit

Following word yesterday that Sir Ian McKellen had finished his scenes for "The Hobbit" films, Peter Jackson announced today that Orlando Bloom is done filming his scenes as Legolas as well (he also says Evangeline Lilly is done with Tauriel). Jackson posted this:


"A day after saying goodbye to Gandalf and Tauriel, it was time to farewell Legolas. What a great day it was, with Orlando battling a serious Orc for all 12 hours of shooting - part of the Battle of the 5 Armies for the third Hobbit movie. When we finally got the day done, we said goodbye to Orlando, had a couple of beers ... and couldn't resist doing this!"

Martin Freeman completes filming The Hobbit




Peter Jackson has announced that Martin Freeman has completed his shots for the next two "Hobbit" films and the filmmaker included two photos from the set.


"Tonight Martin Freeman finished his last shot as Bilbo Baggins. The end of an incredible two and a half years. I cannot imagine anyone else in this role - a character that Martin has nurtured and crafted with love and great skill.

We have said goodbye to our elves, humans, wizards and now the hobbit. We now enter our final 2 weeks of pick-ups, and it's wall to wall dwarves. These pick-ups have been gruelling and intense, but I'm so happy with what we've been shooting. These next two movies are going to be pretty great!"
