Thorens TEP 3800 Tube Preamp

Heinz Rohrer, CEO and owner of Thorens, announces the release of the fully balanced and DC-coupled 6-input 12-valve preamp TEP 3800 with an S/N ratio of better than 98dB, 16dB of gain and a sub 1-ohm output impedance achieved with no output transformers. The circuit topography said to be patent-pending uses "two independent and 100% ground-free current loops for the power buffer to eliminate even 1 microamp of cable- or load-induced current in the voltage amplifier stage or ground for highest transparency and cleanliness."

Even the single-ended inputs are converted to fully balanced signal processing and bandwidth of this preamp is claimed to exceed 600kHz. The tubes are "highest quality for military and professional broadcast (like NOS Siemens C3g for Deutsche Post). The output tubes have extremely high mutual conductance of more than 40mA/V to ensure lowest output impedance and extremely low noise."

"The TEP 3800 is an analogue valve pre-amplifier at the heart of which consists an unprecedented circuit design: the counter-parallel amplifier. As opposed to customary circuitries, this has been designed with a fully balanced layout and it is entirely DC-coupled. Another outstanding feature is the extremely low output impedance of the triode stage, which can do without any output transformers.

The bias of each strictly selected valve is elaborately supervised. The use of digital micro-processors within the circuitry however has consciously been omitted in order to ensure that no “digital garbage” can spoil the analogue signal. The fully balanced volume control renders music in all its sonic beauty and fidelity, at any position. The TEP 3800 is provided with balanced as well as unbalanced inputs and outputs and in addition is well equipped to work in combination with home cinema components as well. The TEP 3800 is the perfect partner for the powerful Thorens monoblock amplifiers TEM 3200.

The TEP 3800 comes with a special remote control.

Highlights of the TEP 3800:

1. TEP 3800 is in fact a tube power-amplifier with no output transformer; the output impedance is lower than 1 Ohms = world record for pure tube-output Preamps! Connection of cables with a length of more than 100 yards and/or use of high capacitive cables is no problem.

5. Allmost 6 input channels are available, two of them are switchable between XLR and Cinch-connection.

6. Every non-symmetrical signal (Cinch-Inputs) is converted into a true symmetrical signal with the highest possible quality; all signals are amplified in the symmetrical domain.

7. Innovative volume regulator with Zoom-Function of the most common regulating range for modern signal sources like CD-players
