Trinity Taylor saw the traffic slowing in front of her and braked her green Peugeot 106 to a halt on the M3 motorway in Hampshire. Unfortunately for her, the traffic ahead was the least of her problems. Ten seconds later, a seven and-a-half ton lorry smashed into the back of her, crushing the car beyond recognition and leaving Taylor with such horrific head and chest injuries that she died at the scene.

John Payne, the lorry driver, hadn’t seen the stationary traffic. He’d been experimenting with a new phone mounted using a hands-free cradle on the dashboard of his truck. The 50 mph impact left him without injuries but with a four year jail sentence and the death of a young woman on his hands. Unfortunately, there’s no way of knowing how many other accidents like Payne’s are caused by mobile phone use. Official UK road accident statistics don’t record causation. But only someone more stupid than George Bush would dispute that use of a mobile phone while driving is dangerous. Research by ROSPA drew the following conclusions on the matter.
