TV host 'improving' after crash

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is improving but remains seriously ill in hospital after he crashed a jet-powered car during filming for the BBC show.

The 36-year-old was thought to be driving at about 300mph on an airfield near York when he crashed on Wednesday.

The Health and Safety Executive and the BBC will investigate the incident. The corporation, whose conduct is likely to be closely scrutinised, said in a statement: "We are looking into all the factors of this accident." The statement continued: "It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage until we know the full situation."

Controversial programme

He was initially reported to have suffered serious head injuries and was taken to the neurological unit of Leeds General Infirmary by helicopter. The hospital confirmed that his wife was at his bedside and, at the request of his family, no further information would be released. Hammond's co-presenters on the BBC Two programme, Jeremy Clarkson and James May, were also understood to be visiting their colleague at the hospital.

Top Gear has courted controversy in the past over apparently glamorising fast driving. In 1999 a group of MPs criticised the series for being "obsessed with acceleration and speed". Last year, lobby group Transport 2000 called for the show to be taken off the air accusing it of "glamorising speed and failing to make the connection with danger on the roads".

At the time, Hammond defended the programme, saying: "Top Gear is an entertaining show, for people that are interested in cars, that is driven by people who have been motoring journalists for many, many years."

'Breathtaking force'

Former firefighter Dave Ogden, who was working with Hammond at the Elvington airfield near York, said the team was attempting to break the land speed record. He said the jet-powered car had done several runs when it "veered off to the right". "One of the parachutes had deployed but it went on to the grass and spun over and over before coming to a rest about 100 yards from us."
His crew and an ambulance rushed over and found the car upside down and "dug in" to the grass.

Mr Ogden said he felt for a pulse and heard Hammond breathing before the emergency crews worked together to turn the car the right way up and then cut him free. "He was regaining consciousness at that point and said he had some lower back pain. But he was drifting in and out of consciousness a little bit." Motoring expert Adam Rayner said that at those speeds the driver would experience forces similar to those endured by fighter pilots. "These cars accelerate at 6G - the force is breathtaking and stopping is a real difficulty," he said.

One of the show's former presenters, Quentin Willson, described Hammond as "a wonderful, unique and distinctive Top Gear presenter" but his energy may have led him to overstep the mark. Willson added: "There is no pressure from the BBC or the producer to take undue risks. "But that pressure is in your own head. You want to do an item on the programme which is mind-blowing."

Hammond grew up in Solihull, was educated in Yorkshire and lives near Cheltenham with his wife and children.
In addition to presenting Top Gear for the BBC, he also fronted Brainiac on Sky One and had his own show on Five.

Hammond in general ward and cracking jokes

Steven Morris
Monday September 25, 2006
The Guardian

Richard Hammond, the Top Gear presenter, has continued to make a remarkable recovery from his 300mph dragster crash, and was yesterday well enough to be cared for in a general ward and share jokes with his family and friends.

Hammond suffered a "significant brain injury" in last week's accident but, after spells in intensive care and a high dependency unit, was moved to the side room of a general ward at the weekend. A spokesman for Leeds general infirmary said last night: "He is continuing to make good progress. He is doing well."

Meanwhile, Hammond's co-presenter, Jeremy Clarkson, launched a scathing attack on investigators looking into the crash, and commentators who have suggested the macho, speed-loving BBC2 motoring show ought to be toned down.

Clarkson claimed: "Swarms of bureaucratic bluebottles are nibbling away at the crash site, desperately trying to find some reason Top Gear should be banished from the screens." Writing in the Sunday Times, he added: "Contrary to reports that he was put there [in the dragster] by ratings-hungry producers, it was his idea. He wanted to know what it would be like to go really fast ... He needs that thrill as passionately as a heroin addict needs his next fix."

According to Clarkson, the crash, on Wednesday, was probably caused by a burst tyre. "Who was to blame? Nobody."

The BBC said it was too early to say when the new series of Top Gear, which was due to begin on October 8, would now start. Meanwhile, more than 40,000 people have wished Hammond well and, by last night, £140,000 had been donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which ferried him to hospital.

Top Gear Is Officially Saved!

Filming resumed today for Top Gear, according to The Sun. Yay!

Top Gear host Richard Hammond’s horror 300mph crash will NOT spell the end of the show.

BBC crews resume work on the next series today — filming TV co-host and Sun columnist Jeremy Clarkson test-driving a Lotus.

Hammond was furious the BBC postponed the new series following his accident. Executive producer Andy Wilman vowed to quit if the emphasis on speed was toned down.

And Clarkson — filming at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey today — stressed: “It’s what we do.”

Lego may help Top Gear star recover

Playing with Lego will help Richard Hammond to "relearn" vital skills he may have lost in his high-speed crash, a neurosurgeon has said.

The Top Gear presenter has told how he had become obsessed with the children's toy during his stay in hospital.

Neurosurgeon John Firth, of Nottingham, said repeatedly playing with something "structured" like Lego will help the presenter to learn how to do things again.

He said: "He needs to relearn how to do things he would have done automatically before. Things like writing would come automatically before, because they have been built up since someone was young.

The expert, who serves on a panel of experts for the brain injury association Headway, said through building with Lego, the presenter's brain is beginning to re-learn structured processes, which he can then transfer to other parts of his life.

Mr Firth said head injury patients can have trouble laying down new memories, and can find they remember more from long ago, than more recently.

"The memory uses patterns and we recognise the pattern and compare it with things we have seen before, for example, so we know what it is that we are looking at. When the memory is affected you can lose that ability, so you have to learn the patterns from scratch. That can take time.

Mr Firth said such a state can be brought on by injuring the frontal lobes of the brain and that the important thing now was for Richard to get lots of rest and sleep and to take his time as he rebuilds his life.

Καμία σχέση. Μια χαρά είναι. Απλά έχει short term memory loss. Κατα τα άλλα τα πάει πολύ καλά αν σκεφτεί κανείς το είδος του ατυχήματος.
