Τελικά η Toshiba είναι έτοιμη να κάνει το μεγάλο βήμα και να ξεκίνησε μαζί με την Canon την επόμενη γενιά TV με βάση την τεχνολογία SED. Όπως φαίνεται οι Ιάπωνες κατασκευαστές (Toshiba, Canon, Sony, Hitachi and Matsushita) αφήνουν τις PDP στους Κορεάτeς (Samsung, LG) προφανώς στους Ταϊβανέζους ...
Έτσι φαίνεται ότι θα έχουμε ένα πόλεμο στα Hi-End μοντέλα μεταξύ LCD και SED και το entry level θα είναι η πλάσμα (PDP) ... με σαφώς καλύτερες τιμές ... και ο καταναλωτής θα χαίρετε βέβαια από τις εξελίξεις άλλα το μεγάλο ερωτηματικό θα είναι ... από την LCD και την PDP πια να διαλέξω...
Είναι δύσκολο πλέον να ακολουθείς τις εξελίξεις (ως καταναλωτής ) κάποτε αγόραζες μια Sony η Philips η xxxxxx (βάλτε την αγαπημένη σας μάρκα CRT TV) και ήξερες ότι για 5-7 χρόνια θα είσαι ΟΚ η τουλάχιστον οι εξελίξεις δεν θα ήταν σε τέτοιο βαθμό που θα σε έβαζαν στην πρίζα για κάτι καινούργιο... τώρα μέσα σε 5 χρόνια ειδικά στις επίπεδες οθόνες έχουμε δει 3 τεχνολογίες την μια καλύτερη από την άλλη... PDP , LCD, SED… αναρωτιέμαι μερικές φορές πως να αισθάνεται ο κάτοχος μιας πλάσμα 1ης η 2ης γενιάς αγορασμένης πριν 2-3 χρόνια σε εξωφρενικές τιμές όταν βλέπει σήμερα της καινούργιες LCD πουλιούνται με σαφώς μικρότερο κόστος ... και ας μην συγκρίνουμε την αγορά επίπεδης οθόνης με την αγορά pj το αγοραστικό κοινό είναι διαφορετικό η μάλλον οι ανάγκες που καλύπτουν τα δυο μέσα είναι διαφορετικές ...

Toshiba plans to stop manufacturing and selling plasma display panel (PDP) TVs in Japan by next summer, and then discontinue the products in other markets after that. The company will instead focus on surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) TVs, according to the Japan-based Jiji Press News, as quoted by Bloomberg.
Toshiba has not introduced any PDP TVs in Japan since the end of 2003, and the company was quoted this September by IDG News Service (via PC World) as saying it will phase out its PDP TV business in 2007.
The company plans to focus on SED TVs for the over-50-inch segment by cooperating with Canon, with the first product being introduced in August 2005. In addition, Toshiba has also shown great interest in the LCD-TV market and has set up an LCD-TV panel joint venture with Hitachi and Matsushita Electric Industrial.
Toshiba is not the first Japanese vendor to be rumored to be planning on phasing out its PDP-TV production.
In response to a recent report by the Japan-based Nihon Keizai Shimbun that Sony will exit the PDP-TV market as early as the first half of next year, Sony admitted that it does plan to focus on the LCD- and rear-projection-TV (RPTV) markets but denied that it will stop producing PDP TVs.
In late December, BBC News quoted a Japanese analyst as saying that Sony has decided to exit the PDP-TV business mainly because the company depends 100% on outsourcing PDPs and is not as cost-competitive as other PDP-TV vendors.
In fact, Sony reported a 6 billion-yen (US$58 million) operating loss for its TV business in the third quarter of 2004, according to a company financial report.
However, Sony expects its LCD-TV shipments to grow 60% in 2004, the sources indicated. In addition, Sony has more control over components for its LCD TVs. The company recently announced that it plans to increase production of LCD-TV-use driver ICs by investing approximately 60 billion yen (US$579 million) through 2006.
In South Korea, however, major display makers are expanding their PDP business, with Samsung SDI and LG Electronics (LGE) aggressively competing in the large-size PDP segment. LG Electronics (LGE) introduced a 71-inch PDP TV in November, with Samsung SDI recently announcing that it has developed the world's largest PDP (102-inch).
Samsung SDI said it has invested 30 billion won (US$29 million) in R&D, and its second PDP line was finished earlier this month. A third line, with a capacity of 120,000 panels, will go online early next year, and the company’s total monthly capacity will reach 250,000.
