Another first for the Japanese market, Toshiba has announced the Vardia RD-A301 HD-DVD player.

While that may not seem like the most exciting announcement, this machine has a trick up its sleeve. Alongside the capacious 300GB hard drive, the Vardia can record HD-DVD content directly onto DVDs.

The Tosh conforms to the HD Rec extension, which allows HD-DVD format content to be stored on red laser DVD-R/RW/RAM discs equating to around two hours of content on a 4.7GB disc.

Hitting the Japanese market for around ¥100,000 (about $870) this December, there's no news yet of a UK release.
