Been eyeing those widescreen HDTV sets but don’t want to pony up thousands of dollars? The USB-A 3560 HDTV tuner and bundled Beyond TV software ($129) allows you to enjoy glorious high-resolution HDTV broadcasts from your laptop or PC.

Web-based access lets you schedule shows to record even when you’re not at home, and you can even backup your favourite episodes to DVD. The included Firefly PC remote allows you to control everything wirelessly - kind of like having your own HDTV Tivo built into your laptop...but without all the DRM.

The USB-A 3560 promises to be a high-performance ATSC Terrestrial HDTV receiver optimised for reception of ATSC video, audio, and IP data. The USB-A 3560 connects to a PC via USB cable and is capable of receiving information at the full data rate of an ATSC channel and up to 19.28Mbit/s. The desired data streams are captured and forwarded to the PC through the USB2.0 port at data rates of up to 480Mbit/s.

Conforming to ATSC standards, the USB-A 3560 should be easy to install and provides the flexibility and performance required by TV applications such as Microsoft’s Windows XP Media Center Edition.

The USB-A 3560 receiver supports ATSC audio, video, and data broadcasting. It enables reception of Digital TV programming in more places across North America (Europe support coming soon - when we actually get HDTV!) than ever before, and at no cost!

In early 2005 there were more than 1300 DTV stations on the air in 211 markets in the US. The small size of the USB-A 3560 also makes it convenient for use when space is an issue.
