Pricing starts at $649 for the smaller 5-inch Pixel, available for preorder today. That number scales up to $749 with 128GB of onboard storage, $769 for the larger Pixel XL with 32GB, or $869 for the XL with 128GB. Google gives a choice between black or silver for color, with an exclusive "really blue" option in some markets, such as with Verizon in the US.

Whether you like the Pixel phones or not, Google’s announcement is a huge deal because it signals a monumental shift in Google’s mobile phone strategy.

With the Pixel phones, Google will now be directly “managing inventory, building relationships with carriers, sourcing components, making supply chain deals, and managing distribution.” It will even be making its own phone accessories.

Google is now a direct competitor to the companies that it provides the Android software to.

Google will employ Apple’s supply chain style and develop its own internals for smartphones, including customized processors.

Google Pixel receives a DxOMark score of 89, the highest rating ever!

Indeed, 89 is the highest score that DxOMark has ever awarded a smartphone. Apple was proud to unveil the camera quality that went into the iPhone 7, but that device only received a score of 86, which is the same score the Samsung Galaxy S6 received. The Pixel edges out the previous champion, the Galaxy S7, by a single point.

DxOMark has actually given the Pixel a higher camera score than the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II, a DSLR that starts at $6,000.
