I understand you are having problems using Rocket 88 speaker cable? From
what I was told, you are using Classe amplifiers and KEF Ref 2 speakers.
Is this correct: the Classe amp is overheating with the Rocket 88 but not
with Indigo?
Very curious indeed since both of these cables are very moderate in
capacitance. Not to mention that the Classe amps are normally very stable.
It is conceivable that the length of 21ft (along with the cumulative
capacitance) happened to be a total capacitive amount that is right on the
"tipping point" between OK, not OK and OK again. Although rare with stable
amps like the Classe, it can happen.
In years past, there were several British made amps (such as NAIM and LINN)
that were extremely sensitive to any kind of capacitive load. These amps
were borderline unstable to begin with and actually required somewhat
primitive parallel designed speaker cable, more or less made like common zip
cord in order to function properly.
I don't believe the Classe amps have this issue at all.
One way to attack this problem is to make the speaker cables either longer
or shorter so that you move away from this particular resonance point that
seems to be causing your amplifiers trouble. Is that workable for you?
Do the amplifiers sound unusual when you are using them with Rocket 88 or is
it purely a heat problem? (I just want to make sure we are dealing with the
right thing here.) Do the amplifiers overheat to the point of shutting down
or do they just feel hot to the touch?
I'm sorry you are having this issue and promise you that we will resolve it
for you.
Best regards,
