Fox Two-Pack BDs Released

Today, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is releasing a series of Blu-ray sets of two titles from its own catalog and MGM's.

These two-packs are rather aggressively priced at an MSRP of $34.98 each, which makes them very good value for the money. There is no information available regarding how the two movies are packaged together.

Watchmen Arriving Also As Movie/PS3 Game Combo

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that its upcoming PS3 game 'Watchmen: The End is Nigh', based on the 'Watchmen' film, will be released in July 2009 in a game/film hybrid that will include the 'Watchmen: Director's Cut' BD. This two-disc collectible set will feature exclusive artwork in a premium package.

The game will also be released in the more traditional retail and downloadable formats.

'Watchmen: The End is Nigh' is a hardcore mature action brawler featuring bloody visceral combat in settings which are reminiscent of the film. It is divided in two parts. Part 1 (released in March 2009 on the PlayStation Network) takes place more than a decade before the film's main story, delving into the partnership of urban vigilantes Rorschach and Nite Owl before the hero-banning Keene Act. In Part 2, the duo team up again as Rorschach contacts Nite Owl to help solve the case of a missing girl, Violet Greene.

Braveheart Gets September 1st Release Date

One of the most eagerly-awaited titles for Blu-ray is definitely moving towards an actual release.

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Paramount Home Entertainment will bring the Mel Gibson war/action epic 'Braveheart' to Blu-ray on September 1.

UK Gets Watchmen Theatrical Cut Only

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the release of 'Watchmen' on Blu-ray in the United Kingdom on July 27. Unlike the US edition from Warner –which will only feature the 186-minute director's cut of the movie-, the UK version will only include the 162-minute theatrical cut. Bonus materials also will be different. The release will consist of two BDs plus one DVD with a digital copy.

Paramount and DreamWorks catalog Blu-ray titles

Braveheart (9/1), Deep Impact, Escape from L.A. and 48 Hours (9/15), Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 2, Gladiator: Extended Edition and Galaxy Quest (9/22), and Forrest Gump and It's a Wonderful Life (11/3).

What's more, the Star Trek: The Next Generation - Original Motion Picture Collection (which will include Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis) is planned for release sometime in November or December, timed to coincide with the DVD/Blu-ray release of J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek.

Our industry sources have informed us that Braveheart is due to arrive on Blu-ray Disc on 8/11 from Paramount. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Brugundy, Gladiator and Galaxy Quest are all tentatively planned for Blu-ray release in September, followed by South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut likely in October and Forrest Gump in November. And with a little luck, a Star Trek: Next Generation Motion Picture Collection will arrive sometime before the end of the year (likely around the same time as J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek and Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 2 & 3), containing Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Nemesis.

Also today, sources are telling us to expect Warner to release New Line's Rush Hour on Blu-ray on 7/7, followed by Rush Hour 2 in early August. Also tentatively due in August are Chuck: Season 2, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles - Season 2 and Fringe: Season 1. Additional catalog titles we've been told to expect on Blu-ray before the end of the year from Warner and New Line include Nightmare on Elm Street, Snakes on a Plane, Sphere, Gremlins, Magnolia, Heat, Boogie Nights, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Logan's Run, The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, The Green Mile, North by Northwest and more (all TBA).

"In order to bring all the visual splendor of The Wizard of Oz to the Hi-Def world of Blu-ray Disc, the film has been entirely remastered, with each of the original Technicolor camera negatives scanned using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final 'capture' master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film's previous DVD release.

The Dreamer of Oz – which makes its long-awaited home video debut. Also remastered the occasion, this full-length motion picture was an NBC-TV special event in 1990 and thrilled critics and audiences as it told the back story of author L. Frank Baum, "the Royal Historian of Oz.” John Ritter shines in the title role -- the man who defied all odds to create the famous characters and stories. Annette O'Toole beautifully co-stars as his supportive wife, with Rue McClanahan as his challenging witch of a mother-in-law.
Victor Fleming, Master Craftsman -- a new feature-length documentary produced specifically for this release about the Hollywood director who, in the same year, miraculously brought both Oz and Gone With the Wind to the screen.
Hollywood Celebrates It's Biggest Little Stars-- a new featurette stars seven of the original "Munchkins of Oz" and tells the saga of the long journey, culminating in them receiving their own 2007 Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Magic Cloak of Oz -- the first release of the complete 1914 silent film, including lost footage never before included in a home video presentation of this feature (produced by Baum himself).
The Patchwork Girl of Oz -- another 1914 Baum-produced, feature-length silent film, new to Warner Home Video.
The Wizard of Oz Sing-Along Track -- here making its home entertainment debut.
Reproductions of Archival Material -- Extraordinary renderings of the original 1939 Oz campaign, exploitation, and press books. These materials constitute a Hollywood "holy grail" for Oz, Garland, and motion picture fans alike and, for decades, have been among the most sought-after and impossible-to-find collectibles.
Behind The Curtain -- a 52-page miniature coffee-table book, assembled by pre-eminent Oz historian John Fricke. Encompassing much previously unpublished material, the deluxe volume includes behind-the-scenes Oz photographs, studio memos, and script pages for abandoned scenes and musical numbers.
