Paramount Home Entertainment has just OFFICIALLY announced a trio of BD titles that we've been hinting at for months now in The Rumor Mill. Specifically, Braveheart and Gladiator arrive on Blu-ray on 9/1, followed by Forrest Gump on 11/3. All three will kick off a new premiere series for the studio, called the Sapphire Series. Each will be a 2-disc set, will be fully remastered and will include extensive, never-before-seen bonus material. Here's a breakdown...

Braveheart will feature 2 hours of new material, including a trio of new BD-Java Interactive Timelines (Production, Historical and Fiction), 2 documentaries (Braveheart: A Look Back and Smithfield: Medieval Killing Fields) and the Battlefields of the Scottish Rebellion option explained thusly by the studio:

Two major Scottish battlefields, Falkirk and Bannockburn, will be presented as 3D models that can be explored for further investigation into the military strategies and timetables employed in each. Topography, weapons, troop movements, and leadership data can also be accessed. An alternate playing mode will allow the story of each battle to unfold in an "automated" fashion, much like the interactive dioramas displayed at historical site museums around the world.

Meanwhile, Gladiator will be presented with both the theatrical and extended editions, and will include two separate audio commentaries (one on each edition), The Scrolls of Knowledge interactive viewing mode (with trivia, a deleted scene marker for the extended edition and branching featurettes), the Visions from Elysium: Topic Marker (that allows you to create playlists of various topics of interest while watching the film, so you can watch bonus material on those topics after the film), the Strength and Honor: Creating the World of Gladiator documentary with its own enhanced viewing mode (offering branching featurettes and trivia), 5 behind-the-scenes documentaries (The Making of Gladiator: HBO First Look, Gladiator Games: The Roman Blood Sport, Hans Zimmer: Scoring Gladiator, My Gladiator Journal and Image & Design), abandoned sequences and deleted scenes, and VFX Explorations of Germania and Rome.

Finally, details for Forrest Gump (which is being released on Blu-ray in honor of its 15th anniversary this year) will be released in the coming weeks, but we're told it will also include new material such as a newly-recorded roundtable discussion video. From the studio's press release, director Robert Zemeckis had this to say:

I'm delighted that Forrest Gump is going to be a part of Paramount's Sapphire Series so that fans can enjoy it at home with pristine picture and sound along with a wealth of special features to give the film context. It's wonderful that Paramount is taking the time to produce exceptional Blu-ray presentations of these classic films.

Rome and Sopranos Get November Release Date

'Rome: Complete Box Set' will be released on Blu-ray on November 16, and 'The Sopranos: Season One' a week later.

Special features are still unavailable.

Other Warner and HBO series scheduled are: 'Fringe Season 1' on September 28, 'Smallville Season 8' on October 12, 'True Blood Season 1' on October 26, 'Supernatural Season 4' on November 2, and 'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 2' on November 30.

Wolverine Limited Edition with Figurine in Germany

The German branch of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' on Blu-ray on October 2. It will be available in a regular edition or an extended limited edition that will include a DVD, a digital copy and, more uniquely, a collector's figure featuring Wolverine fighting Sabretooth.

Star Trek Original Series Season 2 BD for September

Paramount Home Entertainment will release 'Star Trek: The Original Series: Season 2' on Blu-ray on September 22, with all 26 episodes from the 1967-68 season. Like 'Season 1' did, this box set will consist of seven discs and will include both the original broadcast version and a remastered version with new special effects.

Πήρα το Ghostbusters χωρίς να περιμένω ελληνικούς υποτίτλους και με έκπληξη είδα ότι το γνωστό χαρτάκι που λέει "το Blu-ray μας είναι τόσο καταπληκτικο που για να το παίξετε πρέπει να κάνετε fw update στο player σας" ήταν γραμμένο στα αγγλικά και τα ελληνικά (μόνο)! Ρε μπας κι έχει σκέφτηκα, ψάχνω το οπισθόφυλλο αλλά τίποτα, το βάζω να παίξει και πάλι τίποτα βέβαια. Μας κάνουνε και πλάκα. :121: :115:

Star Trek Blu-ray Full Details Revealed

After the appetizer given early this morning, Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed the full release details for 'Star Trek', which will hit store shelves on Blu-ray on November 17, day-and-date with DVD. It will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p High Definition with English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD, French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital with English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Portuguese subtitles. Over three hours of bonus materials will be included.

The Blu-ray offers exclusive branching pods that allow for enhanced exploration, more fascinating features on the starships, planets, props, costumes and sound of STAR TREK, as well as a Starfleet Vessel Simulator and access to the latest NASA news about real-life space exploration via BD-Live.

Season One of Clone Wars Announced for Blu-ray

Lucasfilm Ltd. in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that they will bring 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Complete Season One' to Blu-ray on November 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, though you can expect to see a 1080p VC-1 video presentation accompanied by a Dolby Digital soundtrack.
