Consonance D-Linear 8C wireless DAC







Opera Consonance's new D-Linear 8C wireless DAC is an interesting alternative to Apple Airport Express and Micromega Airstream units. It can connect to a computer (PC or Mac) via wifi and stream music wirelessly. Various digital inputs are provided so the unit can function as a DAC. It even has a capable headphone amplifier. Quality parts through-out with low noise toroidal transformer and class A output stage.



The heart of the D-Linear 8C is an Analog Devices AD1853 24-Bit chip running at a 192kHz sampling rate. There are 4 selectable digital inputs on the rear panel consisting of a coaxial RCA, AES, Toslink and Wireless. The basic signals are displayed through the front panel meter. This meter will also indicate when the signal is locked in.

Luxman DA-200 USB DAC


Featuring Burr-Brown chip PCM1792A, the unit can accept USB digital inputs of up to 24/96 (drivers needed for PC and Mac), while the other digital inputs are up to 24/192khz. All digital inputs are up-sampled to 192kHz using internal low-jitter clock. There are provision for analog inputs, which are converted to digital for processing. Very high quality parts are used, which is typical of Luxman's product.


In addition to the unbalanced RCA outputs, XLR balanced outputs, headphone output, optical and coaxial S/PDIF digital outputs also provided.

Nmode 24bit/192kHz DAC from Japan


The Nmode X-DP1 is a 24bit/192kHz DAC using the high-end Burr Brown PCM1792A DAC chip, itself capable of noise levels 130db down. Inputs are a plenty with two coaxial inputs, two optical inputs plus a single USB input limited to red book standards.

The back panel however is awash with inputs and outputs which on top of the above mentioned digital inputs include: two digital outputs, one coaxial one optical, word clock input, two analogue line levels inputs via RCA and a single balanced XLR input. Output is via balanced XLRs or unbalanced RCA, with a small switch to make those outputs fixed at line level or variable via the front panel volume control, making it also a pre-amplifier.

The X-DP1 is also a headphone amplifier with a 6.3mm headphone socket mounted on the front panel, which along with the pre-amplifier function, explains the analogue inputs on the rear.

With a signal to noise ratio of 116db, this is going to be a very good DAC that could quite easily be all you need as a digital front end with it's plethora of both analogue and digital inputs, a fine headphone amplifier capable of driving headphones with 300ohm impedance and superb 'Made in Japan' build quality, we can't wait to get our hands on this one!

New Rega 24bit/192kHz DAC Released


Rega have announced and released (in the UK at least) their much rumoured new DAC, simply called Rega DAC, inventive stuff!
It will also be available in silver.

In terms of features, the Rega DAC has two coaxial inputs, two optical inputs, all of which are capable of receiving 24bit/192kHz signals. Like too many DAC manufacturers however, the USB input is limited to redbook standards, so 16bit/44.1 files.

I have said it before and I will say it again, why limit the USB port?

One of the biggest reasons to use a computer for playback is to access high res music files, and to be able to play those files back with this DAC will require a USB to S/PDIF converter such as the M2Tech HiFace that is capable of sending the full res files to the coaxial inputs.

Inside the DAC features a Wolfson digital receiver with a high stability low jitter clock, a pair of parallel-connected Wolfson WM8742 DAC's, which are driven via a buffer stage, a similar configuration to that used in the Isis CD player. No upsampling is offered.

Output is via unbalanced RCAs only. However unusually, there are two digital outputs included too. The front panel features a power button, an input selector, and a filter button with five different filter options. Finally, input data rate LEDs all feature on the front face.

3X Clock

Light Harmonic’s has raised the bar with our innovative “3X Clock” architecture which allows each clock to operate at it’s optima performance, ensuring the lowest possible jitter. The first clock is dedicated to the USB signal transmission, the second clock dedicated to 44.1K (up to 352.8K) audio playback and the last clock is dedicated to 48K based (up to 384K) audio playback.

Musiland MD30 DAC/Headphone amp


China's Musiland has gained quite a following especially in the headphone enthusiast circles. Its MD10 is considered one of the best in terms of price/performance ratio. Its new DAC/Headphone amp, the MD30 features USB2.0 high speed asynchronous interface at up to 32bit/192kHz. At its core, a FPGA audio processing technology promise lower jitter and more accurate sound. The D-7 sports a Wolfson DAC chip (up to 24/192), and the galvanically isolated USB connection is of asynchronous type. Adjustable upsampling rate (1x, 2x, 4x) accessible from the front panel. So via digital output, the unit can be used as an asynchronous USB to S/PDIF converter, and also asynchronous sample rate converter. Unit seems to be very well-made and styling is clearly influenced by Goldmund SRM models from the 1990s, of which the company has close relationship with.
