APL Hifi DAC-M


Alex Peychev's APL Hifi is finalizing his state-of-the-art digital to analog converter. The new DAC-M has obviously very impressive specs. Enhancing on the DAC-S, which we previously covered. It comes with AES/EBU input, asynchronous USB and two Coaxial S/PDIF inputs. Sporting unprecedented 20 AKM AK4399s 32-bit DACs per channel. It has a transformer-coupled tube output stage featuring special custom Oxygen Free Copper Lundahl audio transformers, and pair of the vintage new old stock E182CC tubes. The unique remote controlled H-Attenuator with 0.5dB step is also intact negating the need of a preamplifier. All-aluminum IR remote is included.





The DAC-M is an all-hand-made with point-to-point wiring. The Italian made aluminum enclosure is 17x12x3.5 inches. Special, custom, oversized P-Core transformer is specifically hand-made for the DAC-M. Introductory price is $19,500 including 5 years warranty and shipping.

Burson Audio DAC-160


Australian Burson Audio's claim to fame was its excellent HA-160D headphone amp+preamp+DAC which uses Burson's proprietary discrete operational amplifiers (not IC OpAmps, also available as upgrade modules for other products). Burson is back with a stand alone digital to analog converter dubbed the DAC-160 which is based roughly on the DAC section of the HA-160D, housed in a handsome machined aluminum case.

Peachtree Audio the maker of popular iNova and iDecco digital-ready integrated amplifiers announced a new model - DAC●iT which slots-in under the company's current iDac at a lower price point of US$449. The unit is based on the ESS Sabre ES9022 chip with three digital inputs: USB (24/96 adaptive), Coax SPDIF (24/192), and Toslink optical (24/96). The digital inputs are transformer-coupled for ground isolation, USB input also features galvanic isolation. Dimensions are 2.42" H x 6.5" W x 6.5" D, which is the same foot print as previous generation Mac Mini.

The Asynchronous USB DAC is 24/192kHz capable and is powered by the USB port but signals are galvanically isolated. Mytek Digital of New York City, manufacturer of high end mastering audio converters announced at AES Convention in New York, in October 2009, a brand new Stereo 192 DAC, top performance 192k PCM and DSD Digital to Analog Converter. The new DAC features USB and Firewire, as well as standard AES, SPDIF and Toslink inputs, capable of handling stereo PCM playback of up to 24 bit 192k as well as playback of DSD files with absolute state of the art accuracy and transparency.

Numerous features include: high end headphone amplifier, precision volume control with memory (separate for phones and main output), selectable upsampling to 192k and optional remote control.

The DAC will be available in Q1 2010, in both industrial and hi-fi 1/3 rack highly portable enclosure, at Mytek dealers worldwide. It's priced at $1595 for industrial version and $1695 for black or silver Hi-Fi version with RCA outputs.

The Aletheia brand will be a range of electronics with a fundamentally different approach - the fusion of outstanding electronics design with all the Vertex principles of RFI and microphony control, right down to a component-by-component level (ie each chip, capacitor, resistor and so on.....).





1. A completely modularised design with very high levels of process separation, with extensive anti-vibration and anti-RFI/EMI techniques throughout.
2. 16-bit d to a conversion with no oversampling or filtering. DAC circuitry housed in EM absorptive box.
3. Passive I to V output stage using Vishay resistors and Mundorf supreme silver/gold/oil caps.
4. Ultra-high quality quad-stage power supply topology using mains pre-filtering, fully enclosed (EMI absorptive) 100 VA transformer on decoupling mounts, a discrete component pre-regulator and 4 second-stage discrete component regulators. The regulators are Pauly Hynes Design items, heavily modified with the application of anti-RFI/EMI and anti-microphony techniques.
5. All wiring downstream of mains transformer is solid-core silver with EMI absorptive tubing.
6. Digital input - s/pdif BNC, RCA and optical.
7. Analogue outputs RCA and XLR.
8. All signal sockets mounted on decoupled sub panels.

SOtM dAC-200 24bit DAC



Another day, another DAC hits the market, but this one is a little more interesting that most releases, primarily because it doesn't use the more common DAC chipsets from Burr Brown, Wolfsen or even the ESS Sabre. The SOtM uses a 32bit Japanese AKM chip as found in the high-end and very costly Esoteric DA converters.

The dAC-200 itself is no low end option as it retails for US$2000, but it has quite a bit to offer for the money, including remote control and a plethora of inputs including 2 x AES/EBU, 3 x Coaxial, 1 x Optical and 1 x USB. Should be enough for most setups. Output is via high quality unbalanced RCAs or balanced Neutrik XLR connectors.

Internally it uses dual power supplies with heavy filtration, and uses audio grade components throughout. The dAC-200 also has a sample rate converter, which the user can chose the upsampled frequency, or bypass altogether. The optical and USB ports support 24bit/96kHz data rates, while all other inputs support 24bit/192kHz. Line out frequency response is quoted as 10Hz ~ 100KHz (-3db).

We have a sample unit on the way to us now for evaluation, along with their dx-USB HD, a USB to S/PDIF converter in the vein of the M2Tech HiFace EVO.

Naim Dac



Post buffer Naim relies on proprietary software for their digital filter, then a Burr Brown PCM1704K chip per channel just as their flagship CD555 player does. I/V conversion is discrete and borrowed from the output stages of Naim’s preamps. There are four twinned inputs, i.e. each is both coaxial (2 x RCA/BNC each) and Toslink. Control is via panel switches or remote. As with the firm’s preamps, volume control is also possible via Apple remote. Potential mates aren’t just CD players or transports but also satellite receivers and game consoles.







Two more digital inputs, one front one back, are USB. These accept USB sticks or iPods/iPhones but not computers or external drives as are reserved for Naim’s NDX. Acceptable USB data formats are WAV or FLAC. The rear panel also sports the so-called Link Plug, a multi-pin socket. In hallowed Naim tradition, removing it allows adding the €4.178 external XPS power supply or the €7.498 555PS either of which obviously push the DAC into far pricier strata.







# The Naim DAC offers 4 S/PDIF inputs (2 x BNC, 2 x RCA) duplicated by 4 Toslink sockets. Two USB sockets are reserved for USB sticks with WAV/FLAC data. Hard disks may not apply.
# Sonically there’s less light than with many other converters and the tonal center of gravity is lower and centered on the lower midrange. The treble is believable but less prominent. Staging is very stable without image drift.
# Vocals and instrument have realistic color but so-called air isn’t a forté to make the presentation more compact than elsewhere.
# Core strengths are dynamic constrast, musical structure and rhythm. This machine follows company reputation for excellent PRaT.
