The Fly: Ultimate Collector's Edition DVD

,

So how do you go about "celebrating" the 20th Anniversary of a classic science fiction movie? Well, if you are 20th Century Fox you release an amazing sounding boxset, packed to the gills with extras and movies. And this is what they have done for the anniversary od David Cronenburg's remake of The Fly, in which you not only get the 1986 movie but its 1989 sequel starring Eric Stoltz you also get the original Vincent Price movie and its two sequels and two discs packed with extras. Which sounds amazing on paper but is it actually worth the £69.99 rrp? (Be warned this review, like the boxset itself, is a little 'epic' in length!)

The Fly (1986)

The Movie that this boxset is all in aid of, David Cronenburg's remake, stars Jeff Goldblum as the scientist Seth Brundle. Brundle suffers from travel sickness and is working on a matter transporter so he would never have to suffer from air, car or any other motion sickness again. At a science convention he meets Ronnie (Geena Davis), a reporter for a scientific magazine who he invites back to his home/laboratory to show her his experiment.

This first demonstration of Brundle's transmat isn't wholly successful as, even though it does teleport a baboon between the two telepods, it also turns the hapless creature inside out. Ronnie, however, has seen enough and agrees to record Seth's progress as he continues to try and solve the problem of matter transportaion. And while Seth works and Ronnie records, the two of them slowly fall in love, which is a 'slight' problem as Ronnie's boss, Stathis Borans, is also her ex-boyfriend and he starts to cause problems for the couple.

But then comes the breakthrough, as Brundle cracks the problem behind teleportation and inevitably wants to celebrate with Ronnie. Unfortunately Ronnie chooses this moment to go and sort out her relationship with Stathis once and for all, leaving Brundle to celebrate by himself. And, in one of these moments everyone seems to encounter when they are slighty drunk, he decides to send himself through the teleportation pods. Things seem to go ok, but he doesn't yet realize that there was another passenger in the pod and he has become fused with a house fly at the molecular level, causing a slow but inevitable transformation into something else, a "Brundle-Fly", and horror and danger to everyone else.

Cronenburg had already proven he could do character driven movies, like Dead Zone, and special effects movies, like Videodrome, and The Fly combines both of those to amazing effects. Jeff Goldblum is wonderful as the shy and slightly introverted Brundle, and effortlessly handlys the transformation into the more confident and powerful first stage of Brundle-Fly. He is such a likeable character that, as he becomes the more viscious Brundle-Fly, you really care about what is happening to him. Geena Davies, who up until this part in her career had only really been known as a comedien, is also superb as Ronnie, who goes from being totally besotted with the new man in her life, to being scared for him as he seems to fall apart and then scared of him as the truth about what he is becoming comes out. The chemistry between the two leads is very believable, but this is probably due to the fact that they two of them were an item during the filming. And then there is John Getz who goes from being a complete bastard at the begining of the film to turning into the hero by the end, even though his character, Stathis Borans, doesn't change at all in what is a brilliant supporting part.

Jeff Godblum's performance isn't just limited to the "man" though, he also has the difficult job of personifying a human sized fly, tranforming a Fly's movements into a believable performance, aided of course by the amazing visual effects as his body deteriorates before our eyes. And those effects are realy amazing, culminating in the moment when Brundle-Fly adds his teeth to the ever growing "Brundle Museum of Natural History" in his bathroom cupboard, complete with various other body parts! But the end of the movie is the most visually stunning, and tense, with some truly disgusting moments and of course the final stage of Brundle-Fly's transformation, which in these days of CGI monsters is an animatronic treat.

This is possibly one of Cronenburg's finest sci-fi movies with everything that fans love about his work present and correct and Jeff Goldblum has never been better in a role. If you have never seen The Fly then you are missing out, not just on one of the best remakes ever but on a classic sci-fi/horror movie.

The Fly II (1989)

After the sucess of Cronenburg's Fly a sequel was greenlit, this time directed by Chris Walas, who had worked on visual effects for movies like The Fly and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and was making his directorial debute with this movie.

This time the story concerns Martin Brundle, son of the late Seth Brundle and Ronnie. Ronnie dies in childbirth so Martin is raised by Bartok Industries, the company funding Seth Brundle's Teleportation experiment in the original movie. Martin is afflicted with a strange genetic disorder, the result of his fathers mutation, and by the time he is four he looks and acts like an adult, classed as a genius and never sleeps.

During his "childhood" Martin witnesses a failed attempt to replicate his fathers teleporting success, the result of which is a hideously deformed dog, which Martin had befriended before Bartok ordered it used in the failed experiment. Once he reaches "adulthood" Anton Bartok (played brilliantly by Lee Richardson) offers Martin the chance to finish his fathers work. He readily agrees and not only cracks the problem behind teleportaion but also befriends Beth, a girl who works nights at Bartok Industries, who becomes his girlfriend.

Unfortunately Martin's mutated DNA starts a rapid change following his first successful teleportation, causing him to start changing into a new Brundle-Fly, but not before he discovers a way to change his DNA back to normal. But wll he be able to escape Bartok and become truely human?

The Fly II is much more of a "schlock" horror movie than its predessor, with much more blood and exploding heads than David Cronenburg's. But it also has a very tragic air about it. Seth Brundle went by choice into the telepod that caused him to be spliced with a fly whereas Martin Brundle was born with his fathers mutated DNA already present. This means from the first moment the movie starts you know what his eventual fate will be, and this just lends itself to the tragic atmosphere that permiates the movie.

Eric Stoltz is superb as the innocent Martin Brundle, who slowly realizes that the people who he trusts and think love him are actually not to be trusted at all and he captures the tragedy inherant in the character, bringing the same qualities to the role as he did in Mask. Daphne Zuniga is also good, being the rock Martin clings to as he goes through his change. And then there is Lee Richardson as Anton Bartok, a very chilling and evil man mascerading as someone who cares about Martin, he is a pretty classic villain but he plays it so well that he makes Martin likeble, even when he is becoming the new Brundle -Fly.

Which brings me onto the SFX. As you'd expect they are even better than what was done in The Fly, continuing the evolution of Brundle-Fly, and changing the transformation in the process. You also get to see a lot more of Brundle-Fly this time, and a lot more exploding heads as well!

I've always remembered The Fly II as being a pretty dissapointing sequel, which suprises me now as it is actually a really good movie, with great acting from Eric Stoltz, and a multi layered storyline married to some excellent SFX, and as a sequel its a great conclusion to the sotry in The Fly, and should please fans of the original and of schlock horror movies as well.

The boxset also contains the original Vincent Price The Fly from 1958 and The Return of The Fly from 1959 (which unfortunately were not available for me to review) and Curse of The Fly from 1965.

Curse of The Fly continues the story of the Delambre family as they experiment with teleportation. Patricia Stanley (played by Carole Gray) escapes from a mental hospital and is picked up on the road by Martin Delambre. He agrees to take her with him to New Orleans where they fall in love and get married. When they return to his family home she meets the families Oriental sevants, Tai (played convincingly by Burt Kwouk) and Wan (a seriously daft looking and sounding Yvette Rees) and, eventully, his father Henri (played with quite a lot of style by Brian Donlevy).

But then strange things start to happen. Patricia is startled one night by a hidiously deformed woman and Wan seems set on her not being part of the family. Fearing she is going mad again, she begs her new husband and father in law to tell her what is going on, who the deformed woman is and what is in the locked cells in the garden etc. Add in a police officer who is concerned with the dissapearance of Judith Delambre, Martin's first wife, and their lives are set on a collision course.

Curse of The Fly is a strange addition to the series, not least of all because it doesn't actually feature a fly monster! Instead you get a molecular charge in the male members of the family that has more in kin with the 1989 The Fly II than anything else. But this is fairly classic 'Gothic Horror' Territory and the director and actors do give a good go at pulling it off.

The acting is of course dated and over the top, making it feel more suited to the stage than the screen and you can see where budgetry constraints, and the abscence of VIncent Price, have hampered the production to no end but this is an enjoyable enough movie, even if not a patch on the first two, and a great addition to the boxset, if for no other reason than it never having been available on DVD before and a movie that a lot of people would otherwise never even see.

EXTRAS

The Fly (1986)

Commentary By David Cronenburg: This is a very interesting chat track as Cronenburg takes us through every step of the production of the movie that he was involved in, from behind the scenes anecdotes about the actors to the writing & filming process. Definately worth a listen.

Fear Of The Flesh Documentary: (Original 2 hrs 16 min Enhanced 2 hrs 42 min) This mammoth documentary is available either in it's original form or with around 30 minutes of "branching" material. As a retrospective look at the movie this is an exhausting, and utterly fascinating, look at the production. Everything that you could ever wish to know about the movie is gone into here, with a hell of a lot of detail and interviews with pretty much everyone involved.

The Brundle Museum Of Natural History: (11 mins 50s) Chris Walas (who worked on the SFX for The Fly) takes us around film historian Bob Burns house showing us the props & puppets that he has from The Fly. This features some fascinating looks at the different designs for Brundle-fly and it's only drawback is that it is a little too short.

Deleted Scenes: Four deleted scenes, best of which are the failed "monkey-cat" fusing experiment as Brundle-Fly tries to come up with a cure for his affliction and a "butterfly-baby" dream sequence from the end of the movie, which is very very strange. No commentary but each scene has a text explanation as to why it was cut and where it would of come in the movie if it had been left in.

Extended Scenes: Two extended scenes, again without commentary but with text explanation as to why they were trimmed. There is nothing special to these to be honest.

George Langelaan's Original Short Story: The original short story that was published in Playboy that started the whole Fly series. This is a welcome addition but I can't help feeling that it should of been DVD-Rom content as I personnally find it very annoying having to read lots of text off of the TV.

Charles Edward Pogue's Original Screenplay:

David Cronenburg's Rewrite:

Interactive Magazine Articles: 2 magazine articles that, at various points, have either behind the scenes footage or footage from the movie to illustrate their points. A nice touch, but again reading articles of this length off of the TV gets a little tedious.

Film Tests: (6 min 34s) A collection of five film tests for various of the SFX used in the movie. Seeing Jeff Goldblum cavorting around in the Brundle-Fly costume is quite funny but the real treat is the "Cronenfly" footage that shows David Cronenburg trying out the revolving room set used for Brundle-Fly's wall crawling scenes, complete with bright green wings and feelers. Classic.

1986 Electronic Presskit: Closest thing to filler on the DVD as this promotional piece interviews the cast and crew on the set during filming. Would be quite ineresting, but it is overshadowed by the exhaustive Fear Of The Flesh doc.

1986 Electronic Presskit - David Cronenburg Profile: Another promotional piece from 1986, this time focusing just on David Cronenburg. As a mini-bio for the director it is interesting enough but it is dated.

The Fly II

Commentary By Director Chris Walas & Film Historian/Archivist Bob Burns: This chat track is pretty funny as Walas and Burns, who are obviously good friends have a very good laugh re-watching the movie. They also do go into the production in quite a lot of detail so this is a very informative and entertaining chat track.

Deleted "Stopping For Food" Scene: (1 min 24s) This deleted scene occurs after Martin's transformation is well under way and, while funny, was quite rightly dropped from the finished movie.

Alternate "Houseboat" Ending: (1 min 7s) A very insubstantial, and pointless, alternate ending.

Transformations: Looking Back at The Fly II: (48 min 30s) This retrospective documentary, while not as exhaustive as the one devoted to The Fly, is still a pretty thorough look back at the making of the movie. Some of the subject matter covered here is also covered in the commentary track but this is a slightly more serious version of events.

"The Fly" Papers: The Buzz on Hollywood's Scariest Insect: (57 min 37s) This documentary looks back at all the different movie incarnations of the Fly from the original Vincent Price starrer to this sequel, and examines the times that the movies were made etc. Quite an interesting history documentary.

1989 Theatrical EPK: (5 min 10s) As with The Fly DVD this "Electronic Press Kit" is a typical "Making Of", and comes close to being the only "filler" on the disc.

CWI Video Production Journal: (18 min) This featurette covers CWI's puppet and effects tests for the movie, the only shame being that there isn't an optional commentary, but as it is this is a fascinating insight into pre-CGI effects work.

Composer's Master Class: Christopher Young: (12 min 41s) Christopher Young talks us through his score for the movie in this retrospective featurette, trying to explain his influences and how he tried to carry the same musical themes throughout the movie.

Storyboard To Film Comparisons: Three storyboard to film comparisons, with optional commentary from Chris Walas. Interesting enough, if you like seeing how close to the storyboards the actual filming came.
