R.I.P. Actor Paul Walker, Dead at 40

TMZ.com reported the shocking news earlier this evening that actor Paul Walker, best known for his roles in all but the third "Fast and Furious" movie, was in a fiery car crash (unrelated to the shooting of Fast and Furious 7) that killed him and one other passenger.

Walker was reportedly taking friends for test rides in his new Porsche GT in Santa Clarita, when the driver lost control and slammed into a tree that sent the car bursting into flames, killing Walker and one other passenger. It's still unclear who was driving at the time.

The 40-year-old actor had been appearing in various movies and TV shows since the mid-80s but his real breakthroughs came in the early 00's when he was teamed with director Rob Cohen, first for The Skulls and then the first The Fast and the Furious. Walker returned for the sequel 2 Fast 2 Furious, but then bowed out of the series, returning six years later for Fast & Furious 4. That movie relaunched the series to the blockbuster status that it's enjoyed for the last three movies, while Walker has appeared in smaller, independent projects in between.

Walker was in the middle of shooting Fast and Furious 7 with Vin Diesel and new director James Wan and it's undetermined how much more Walker had to shoot on the film or whether rewrites and changes will have to be done.

Walker will next appear in the indie thriller Hours, a passion project of his written and directed by Eric Heisserer, that premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and was due for a limited release on December 13.

This may be one of the most shocking deaths in recent memory, reminding us of the death of Heath Ledger months before he would achieve his greatest success playing the Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. It's a huge loss to the industry, especially the popular "Fast and Furious" franchise, which he helped to nourish.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and colleagues.

UPDATE: Paul Walker's official Facebook page released the following statement:

"It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences." - #TeamPW

Universal Pictures sent us the following statement:

"All of us at Universal are heartbroken. Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the FAST AND FURIOUS films, and to countless fans. We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Paul's family."

A video has been posted on YouTube by user Fultymhustler that was taken only a few moments after the accident had occur. You can watch it in the player below!

UPDATE #2: Santa Clarita County Sheriff Department says that "speed was a factor in the solo vehicle collision." The car was a red 2005 Porsche Carrera GT and the driver of the car, who died as well, was Roger Rodas, CEO of Always Evolving, a car performance and products company.

Relativity Media, which will distribute Walker's upcoming action film Brick Mansions, released the following statement:

“We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of Paul Walker. Paul was an incredibly talented artist, devoted philanthropist and friend. Our hearts go out to his family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Walker's long-time "Fast and Furious" co-star and love interest Jordan Brewster posted on her Facebook Page:

"Paul was pure light. I cannot believe he is gone."

His "Fast and Furious" co-stars, as well as "Furious 7" director James Wan, tweeted the following:

How will Paul Walker's death affect the Fast & Furious 7 production?

Universal Pictures has not commented on the status of Fast & Furious 7 following the death of Paul Walker, but The Hollywood Reporter has an update.

According to the trade, the movie was on hiatus for Thanksgiving when Walker died in the fiery car crash on Saturday. Universal executives and director James Wan held a conference call on Sunday morning to discuss the state of the film, whether rewrites would be necessary and how to proceed in a manner that would be respectful to Walker's death.

The movie is facing a delay in production but won't be abandoned. They add that Walker and the rest of the cast and crew had been scheduled to return to Atlanta on Sunday to resume shooting the seventh installment, but those plans are on hold until today or tomorrow at the earliest.

THR says Fast & Furious 7 was already on an expedited schedule in order to make the July 11, 2014 release, so any delay in production could impact that release date. A large part of the film had been shot, although in January, Walker and the rest of the production were scheduled to travel to Abu Dhabi to film additional scenes.

Universal issued the following statement on Saturday:

"All of us at Universal are heartbroken. Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the FAST AND FURIOUS films, and to countless fans. We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Paul's family."

And the studio posted this photo on the official "Fast & Furious" Facebook page:

Universal Pictures shuts down Fast & Furious 7 production

Universal Pictures has released an official statement on the status of Fast & Furious 7 following the death of Paul Walker in a fiery car accident on Saturday.

"Right now, all of us at Universal are dedicated to providing support to Paul's immediate family and our extended Fast & Furious family of cast, crew and filmmakers," said the studio. "At this time we feel it is our responsibility to shut down production on Fast & Furious 7 for a period of time so we can assess all options available to move forward with the franchise. We are committed to keeping Fast & Furious fans informed, and we will provide further information to them when we have it. Until then, we know they join us in mourning the passing of our dear friend Paul Walker."

The James Wan-directed film was scheduled for a July 11, 2014 release. It is unclear if this means the movie may miss that date now.

Universal working on Fast & Furious 7 revisions for possible January restart

On December 4th, Universal Pictures announced the studio had shut down production for a period of time on Fast & Furious 7 following the death of Paul Walker.

According to a new article at The Hollywood Reporter, Universal had already poured about $150 million into the production and about half of Walker's filming was done. The actor was scheduled for considerable work on the film the week following his death.

The trade adds that the studio is trying to find a way to salvage footage already shot for Fast & Furious 7 instead of starting fresh. Screenwriter Chris Morgan is said to be doing revisions that Universal executives hope can retire Walker's character from the series using scenes already shot. If he succeeds, the cast and crew could return to the set by late January to finish the film.

If Morgan can't, the scrapping of the current version of the film could lead to the largest insurance claim in Hollywood history. The $150 million bill would have to be paid by the studio's insurance firm, Fireman's Fund. The report goes on to say that the studio does intend to release "Furious 7" and is planning an eighth film as well.

As was reported yesterday, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was already moved up a week to "Furious 7's" July 11, 2014 date, indicating that it is already known behind the scenes that Universal won't make that date.

Fast & Furious 7 moved back to April 2015

Following the death of Paul Walker on November 30th, Universal Pictures shut down production on Fast & Furious 7. While the studio did not immediately confirm that the release date would be pushed back as well, it was expected, and 20th Century Fox's decision a bit later to move Dawn of the Planet of the Apes up one week to July 11, 2014 made it almost a certainty that Universal wasn't going to make the date.

It was previously reported that Universal was hoping to resume production in late January 2014. Now, Vin Diesel has confirmed that the release date has been moved back to April 10, 2015, a date which the seventh installment has by itself at the moment. Diesel posted the below photo on Facebook and included the following:

The last scene we filmed together…

There was a unique sense of completion, of pride we shared… in the film we were now completing… the magic captured… and, in just how far we've come…

Fast and Furious 7 will be released…

April 10th 2015!

P.s. He'd want you to know first…

Fast & Furious 7 will retire Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner

In the wake of the tragic loss of leading man Paul Walker last year, Universal's Fast & Furious 7 recently announced a delayed release on April 10, 2015. Because Walker's scenes were partially shot, the studio is seeking to honor his final performance and will offer one last big screen appearance for his franchise alter ego, Brian O'Conner. Today, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the current plan is to "retire" O'Conner without killing him off.

Walker's O'Conner made his first appearance in Rob Cohen's original The Fast and the Furious in 2001. He subsequently appeared in every sequel, save 2006's The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, tying with Vin Diesel for the most franchise appearances.

Fast & Furious 7 enlists the aid of Paul Walker's brothers

Production resumed late last month on Universal Pictures' Fast & Furious 7 following the tragic death of leading man Paul Walker in November. Today, the production has issued the following official statement that confirms the rumors that Walker's brothers, Caleb and Cody, are assisting in finishing the James Wan film:

A Note to the Fans of FAST & FURIOUS

The FAST & FURIOUS saga is about family. The characters are connected by the bond of family, and it is how all of us who have worked together for more than thirteen years feel about each other. It certainly defines how we feel about our fans.

Our family experienced an unthinkable shock in November. We had to take time to grieve Paul, the brother we love and lost, and to figure out if we should move on with our film.

We came together and all felt the only choice was to continue. We believe our fans want that, and we believe Paul would want that too. Paul had already shot his dramatic scenes and most of his action for FAST & FURIOUS 7, and it’s among the strongest work of his career.

We have resumed shooting and now welcome Paul’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, into our FAST family. Caleb and Cody are helping us complete some remaining action for their brother and fill in small gaps left in production. Having them on set has made us all feel that Paul is with us too.

We are just under a year away from the release of FAST & FURIOUS 7, and this film is the most important we’ve ever done together. It will allow the character of Brian O’Conner to live on and let us celebrate Paul in his most defining role.

We wanted to take a moment to speak to our fans directly and thank you for the love and support you always show us as we resume our work.

Fast & Furious 7 officially titled Furious 7 as new poster art is revealed

The next entry in the Fast & Furious franchise is officially titled Furious 7 and will see a trailer released one week from today as part of a live event to be streamed online Saturday, November 1 at at 12pm PST. In the meantime, Universal Pictures has released new artwork for the film, which you can check out in the gallery viewer below.

The new title is a bit of a surprise given the confusion surrounding the title of the previous film. Although advertised as Fast & Furious 6, that film's actual onscreen title was Furious Six, a moniker that director Justin Lin confirmed to ComingSoon.net was the "actual" title.

"It was always designed to be 'Fast Five' and 'Furious Six,'" Lin told in an interview last year. "'Furious Six' was going to be a kind of culmination and wrap-up of 'Fast & Furious' itself. I had it that way and that's the way it's going to be."
