Scott Derrickson to Direct Hyperion Cantos

The Day the Earth Stood Still helmer Scott Derrickson is set to direct Hyperion Cantos for Warner Bros. and GK Films, says Variety.

Derrickson boards a project that will take two Dan Simmons sci-fi novels -- "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion" -- and meld them into one film being scripted by Trevor Sands.

The story is set in the distant future, as a space war threatens Hyperion, a planet known for the Time Tombs -- large artifacts that can move through time and are guarded by a gruesome monster called the Shrike.

Derrickson is also attached to direct Paradise Lost at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Derrickson also co-scripted Devil's Knot for Dimension Films with Paul Boardman, his writing partner on The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

John Stevenson on Masters of the Universe

Variety has confirmed Latino Review's scoop that Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver have set Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson to make his live action directing debut on Masters of the Universe, a re-imagining of the signature Mattel toy line.

He-Man is a brawny prince who transforms into a warrior who becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

Silver is producing through his Silver Pictures and Mattel's Barry Waldo will be executive producer.

TA NEΦΕΛΙΜ ΓΙΝΟΝΤΑΙ ΤΑΙΝΙΑ !!!



Sony Pictures Entertainmen has bought the film rights to "Angelology," a first novel by Danielle Trussoni that sold this week to Viking.

The project will be a co-production between Will Smith and James Lassiter's Overbrook and Marc Forster, the Quantum of Solace director who will produce through his Apparatus banner.

The story is described as a cross between The Da Vinci Code and National Treasure. Trussoni is definitely writing one sequel book, and possibly two.

Angelology revolves around a 23-year old nun, who teams with an angelologist named Verlaine as they race to thwart a group that tries to corral the destructive powers of a race of angel/human hybrids called Nephilim. Their goal is to destroy mankind. Verlaine starts out working for the bad guys--who then tried to kill him--before he teamed with Sister Evangeline in a search for ancient artifacts that are the only things that can stop the Nephilim.

Variety reports Orlando Bloom, Vincent Cassel (Eastern Promises) and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) are starring in The Cross for director Andrew Niccol (Lord of War).

Set against the backdrop of a futuristic border town, Bloom plays a man seeking to cross a mysterious border, something no one else has achieved. Cassel, meanwhile, is the guard who will go to any lengths to foil him. Kurylenko takes the female lead.

Pre-production has begun on the $24 million sci-fi escape story, which is scheduled to start principal photography in July in Australia.

Η πρωταγωνίστρια, την οποία υποδύεται ο ηθοποιός, φέρει το όνομα Minx και όπως δηλώνει η σκηνοθέτης της ταινίας Sally Potter, «παρότι ο Jude πολλές φορές λόγω εμφάνισης βρήκε εμπόδια στο να αναλάβει συγκεκριμένους ρόλους, πήρε την θαρραλέα απόφαση να υποδυθεί μία τραβεστί».

Η ταινία, η οποία η θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηρισθεί ως «μαύρη κωμωδία», έχει επιλεγεί να συμμετάσχει στο Φεστιβάλ Βερολίνου τον επόμενο Φεβρουάριο.

Μεταξύ άλλων παίζουν οι Steve Buscemi, Simon Abkarian, Eddie Izzard and Lily Cole.

MARY - MOTHER OF CHRIST

Aloe Entertainment has put together its New Testament ensemble for Mary, Mother of Christ, says Variety.

Camilla Belle (Push, 10,000 BC) will star as the titular character and will be joined by Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the dual roles of Gabriel and Lucifer and Peter O'Toole as Symeon.

Al Pacino and Jessica Lange are in talks to play Herod and Anna the Prophetess.

Mary Aloe is producing along with Dune Films (Hidalgo, upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time).

Argentine helmer Alejandro Agresti (Valentin, The Lake House) is directing the film, which begins filming in Morocco in May.

MGM plans to release the film wide in 2,000-plus theaters April 2, 2010, which coincides with Good Friday.
