As you can see I have setup a VW100 against the G90.
I will spare you the details, the SONY is very bright in the factory configuration with Contrast at 80 and IRIS in AUTO, but this leads to crushing of whites and I figured it performs best at IRIS on and Contrast set to 50.
With this setting it is still a little brighter than the G90 but not much. I can imagine that after 100 hours this will be vice versa.
However the RUBY is the best digital projector in this price range I have ever tested and even out of the box the colors were very close to the G90.
The black level is not as good as the G90 but the differences are small and I must say I would have not assumed that great performance of a bulb projector.
The RUBY is incredible quiet and has neither motion errors nor false contouring.
It tends to dither in dark scenes and when noise is present it will amplify the effect. I only did comparison tests feeding the setup with 576p from a DENON via HDMI and distributed the signal using a DVIMAGIC to the VW100s DVI input and to the DVI Input of a Lumagen scaler that fed the G90.
I will run more tests with HD today and tell you the outcome.

ok did more tests.
Sony is using some kind of contrast processing when they detect Video (in my case 576p) because now that I have hooked the Ruby to the Lumagen feeding it 1080p it has lost all the blooming that was visible before. However the overall brightness has gone as well and the VW100 is now darker than the G90 being fed with the same 1080p signal out of the analog output of the Lumagen.
It also seems that after 6 hours it already dropped in brightness, wonder if this is going on ?
In general it seems that there has been spent a lot of efforts by the SONY engineers to make the projector look very bright out of the box.
The good part is that the G90 is king on my 3m wide 1,3 gain screen considering overall brightness and black level. Remember I am talking one G90 not a stack.
Considering colors and motion blurring the SONY is really amazing and definetely king in the digital projector domain. They will sell shitloads no question.
So if you ask me this projector if not turning out to become very dark after a short usage of time will really kill most of the CRT business. Sadly said considering that I have many in stock
For guys who like to smoke in the hometheater or are watching many hours a day they probably are still happy with a CRT as I can imagine the bulb cost on the Sony may accumulate to a singnificant figure over time.

I watched some BIKINI D-VHS which are of very good quality and some demo loops from german HD broadcast feeds which are so far ASTRAHD, French CANAL+ in HD and HD1 a belgian HD feed.
The Auto mode is in my opinion not usuable for somebody with my viewing experience. It is a fake method to increase brightness with increased perceived contrast at the stake of blooming and funny gamma which give the picture a very unnatural look.
The blooming may not be verified with test patterns as they are static in nature but with real viewing material it can easily be spotted by switching back and forth with the IRIS setting. So be careful when you qualify the RUBY with static test patterns, your calibrated contrast settings may not be right when you turn the AUTO IRIS to ON.
I cannot tell that I see the IRIS working but the image is just looking more natural with the IRIS in ON all the time.
The RUBY does have a little more crispy look on HD material but the G90 picture has more punch. I would say this results from the natural softness of a CRT whereas the RUBY can adress each pixel individually creating a very high resolution image.
The better punch of the G90 is a little more brightness together with deeper blacks and probably a better GAMMA for typical Video than the factory settings of the RUBY. I will yet have to check if the factory GAMMA is good enough so bare with me.
There is no question that if you are not intending to spend the money for a G90, 1209s or Cine 9 you better go for the VW100HT as long you did not mind the bulb cost.
