Εχουμε συνειδητοποιησει ολοι με τι ασχολουμαστε εδω;

:eek:

Perhaps the most famous of these is the case of Mary, the brilliant color scientist. Mary, so the story goes, is imprisoned in a black and white room. Never having been permitted to leave it, she acquires information about the world outside from the black and white books her captors have made available to her, from the black and white television sets attached to external cameras, and from the black and white monitor screens hooked up to banks of computers. As time passes, Mary acquires more and more information about the physical aspects of color and color vision. Eventually, Mary becomes the world’s leading authority on these matters. Indeed she comes to know all the physical facts pertinent to everyday colors and color vision.

Still, she wonders to herself: What do people in the outside world experience when they see the various colors? What is it like for them to see red or green? One day her captors release her. She is free at last to see things with their real colors (and free too to scrub off the awful black and white paint that covers her body). She steps outside her room into a garden full of flowers. “So, that is what it is like to experience red,” she exclaims, as she sees a red rose. “And that,” she adds, looking down at the grass, “is what it is like to experience green.”

Mary here seems to make some important discoveries. She seems to find out things she did not know before. How can that be, if, as seems possible, at least in principle, she has all the physical information there is to have about color and color vision — if she knows all the pertinent physical facts?

The US Philosopher Wilfrid Sellars describes two images or pictures of man. The scientific image of man is familiar to medics; it’s all about body tissues, genes, and biochemistry. But what if science is not the only valid way of knowing? Sellars sees the ‘manifest image’ of man as ‘the framework in terms of which, to use an existentialist turn of phrase, man first encountered himself’. The manifest image is connected to personhood and self-awareness, it is how I think of myself every day. Consciousness, although contingent and frail, is qualitatively unique and is of great value.

Scientific knowledge is not the only sort of knowledge that is important to persons. ‘I love my wife’ is an important piece of knowledge to me, but it cannot be derived scientifically. It is an example of what is sometimes called ‘personalistic knowledge’.

Frank Jackson formally demonstrates the validity of such personalistic knowledge. If physical science can tell us all that can be known then a colourblind person must be able to know what it is to see red. We can construct this knowledge scientifically around a model of having the right sort of cones in the retina to perceive incident light with a wavelength of 650 nm. Yet if this person, in possession of all available knowledge about redness, were to be cured of their colour blindness then they will learn something new that they did not know before, what it is to see red. Jackson’s argument is a demonstration of something both profound and also obvious to all but the most extreme physicalist. What it is to be me cannot be contained within a scientific account of the self.

Η άγνοια του έμπροσθεν χωροχρόνου, πασπαλισμένη με μπαγιάτικο πεσιμισμό, έχει εξόχως δυσάρεστη γεύση. Πώς την αντέχετε;

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explaining why consciousness occurs at all can be contrasted with so-called “easy problems” of consciousness: the problems of explaining the function, dynamics, and structure of consciousness. These features can be explained using the usual methods of science. But that leaves the question of why there is something it is like for the subject when these functions, dynamics, and structures are present. This is the hard problem.

In more detail, the challenge arises because it does not seem that the qualitative and subjective aspects of conscious experience—how consciousness “feels” and the fact that it is directly “for me”—fit into a physicalist ontology, one consisting of just the basic elements of physics plus structural, dynamical, and functional combinations of those basic elements. It appears that even a complete specification of a creature in physical terms leaves unanswered the question of whether or not the creature is conscious. And it seems that we can easily conceive of creatures just like us physically and functionally that nonetheless lack consciousness. This indicates that a physical explanation of consciousness is fundamentally incomplete: it leaves out what it is like to be the subject, for the subject. There seems to be an unbridgeable explanatory gap between the physical world and consciousness. All these factors make the hard problem hard.
