The Mercedes CLA is Mercedes' best EV yet, with impressive 800V charging, good range, and great driving dynamics. However, it is significantly overpriced compared to rivals like the Tesla Model 3 and smart #5, offering less standard equipment and lower performance and perceived quality for the money.
Design & Quality: Visually appealing exterior (especially in bright colors), but the interior has surprising amounts of visible plastic and disappointing build quality (creaking noises were noted). Excessive use of "star" motifs is ...well, not great.
Performance & Drivetrain: The 2-speed transmission offers no real-world efficiency benefit and causes a noticeable, irritating interruption during hard acceleration (100-110 km/h). Performance is significantly slower than comparably priced competition. Excellent, aggressive one-pedal driving (recuperation) is a major positive.
Charging & Range: Excellent 800V architecture delivers a fast 10-80% charge time (22 minutes). However, it lacks a DC/DC converter, meaning incompatibility with old 50kW chargers and some Tesla Superchargers (though Mercedes plans to add it as an option later).
Features & Price: The biggest drawback. The base price is too high, and many features (like the passenger display, head-up display, or 360° camera) that are standard on cheaper competitors require expensive add-ons. The vehicle fan noise is audibly high-pitched and potentially irritating.
Beyond the costly optional extras, the CLA requires mandatory dealer maintenance every 24 months/30,000 km (costing ≈ €800), a policy seen as too frequent and unnecessary compared to mandatory-maintenance-free rivals like Tesla.
