(Το πιο ενδιαφέρον στο linkedin του Bruno είναι το τελευταίο project, το Purifi που τρέχει από το Δεκέμβρη σε συνεργασία με Lars Risbo και Peter Lyngdorf - "We are still in stealth mode - stay tuned...". Room correction? :whistling: )

Hi All,

I’m quite impressed by the thoughtful posts made here regarding cardioid cabs and of course Noels extensive report. I’m also enormously flattered that Noel likes the Kii THREE design so much that he would actually duplicate it.

I should explain that my primary reason for making a cardioid is to make an attractive speaker that works well anywhere and doesn’t require users to find the magic spot in their room that sounds good. So it’s user friendliness I’m after, something anyone can buy, set up and enjoy. But for someone prepared to build a speaker, “user-friendliness” is hardly on the radar so you can just as well make something that perhaps wouldn’t ever sell but that works well enough for you and is a lot easier to design.

I’m saying this because although the basic concept is what KSTR describes, it gets hairy when you have to take cabinet diffractions into account and if you want to maintain the cardioid pattern over a substantial frequency range. Otherwise the scheme would have been more common. What I’d like to suggest to Noel is to try approximate what those big built-in studio main monitors do. They don’t need cardioid bass because there’s no “behind” that you want to avoid radiating into. Considering your age I assume you rent your flat so drilling a hole in the wall might not make you very popular. A close approximation would be a large, very flat box with bevelled edges like a truncated pyramid. And if you want to toe them in, perhaps build wedge-shaped enclosures that go in the corners and whose front face nicely segues into the wall. Then you really have a boundary speaker. It’ll be large, it’ll be unwieldy to install but it’ll work.

The second reason why I chose to make a cardioid is because I had an idea that allows me to keep it going up to 700Hz and then, using ordinary methods, maintain comparable dispersion up to about 5kHz. So it’s not just a cardioid bass. Dispersion is constant over most of the band, much more so than on its predecessor. On top of that the acoustic centre of the whole affair (except the tweeter of course) is a point about 5cm in front of the midrange. I was quite chuffed when I figured that one out. So that’s why we’ve got this fancy "Active Wave Focusing" name instead of just calling it a cardioid bass box. That is of course something you don’t get with a flat baffle or a soffit mount but clever choice of driver sizes and crossover points should get you far enough along to be worth the effort. So, in short, Noel, if you’re happy to build a wall-mounted speaker, try that before attempting a cardioid.

Oh yes before I forget, the studio had a fixed projection screen with about half a metre of space behind it. I definitely would have preferred to put the speakers the way I do at home (about 10cm from the wall, will post pic in my introduction thread later) to demonstrate that this really works but that would have put them behind the screen. So instead I just plopped them down where I felt they’d look nice on photographs. No experimentation was done with the placement. Just, bam, one here and one there. On the other hand I could now tell people to go stand in the corner and they’d notice the absence of the usual bass build-up. It was wonderful to see their faces light up. Also the room was really way too good. It’s much more fun to try them in bad acoustics. Well, there’ll be enough hotel shows to prove that.

Regarding toe-in I really don’t understand why heavy toe-in isn’t more popular. When the axes cross in front of the listener, the time of arrival and intensity cues counteract so you get a kind of stereo image even outside the sweet spot. When the axes cross behind the listener, the two cues reinforce each other so the image collapses on the nearest speaker. I’m not the only one doing that. The Marantz room at the MOC had their speakers crossed at 90 degree angles and they gave the same reason for it. You do need controlled dispersion for this trick to work of course. I guess some folks like near-zero toe-in because, as Floyd Toole found, lateral reflections are often euphonic (more “space”). I don’t do euphonics as you’ve probably figured.

I hope you’ll forgive me for going back into hiding and not posting many replies because I seem to have gotten myself into a bit of work lately.

Cheers,
Bruno

ps: really it's OK to reply in German. I always find it silly when 10 Germans and 1 foreigner are in one room suddenly everyone has to speak Foreign. In Vegas do as the vegans do, or what was the expression.

κι εδώ:

"I got into active speakers when in 2006 a certain British professional monitor company started their move to using Hypex and I built them a simple, cheap DSP controller for an active 2-way. Until then I hadn't given active much thought on audiophile grounds (all that extra processing and/or the impracticality of having so many super quality DACs). But I had to debug my software so I tried it out on a random pair of DIY boxes without filters. Listening I realized that the potential quality improvement by getting rid of the passive filters outweighed any geeky considerations like pure signal paths etc. So I went to a shrink to have myself cured of audiophilia and other superstitions and the rest, as they say, is history*.

I have to admit that I have come across a few rare passive speakers that rival the clarity (but not quite the directness) of a good active one but on the whole there's no going back for me."

"I have taken no acoustic measures because I currently live next to a noisy street and hope to move in the near future. So I didn't feel like investing in acoustics. But since this has been going on for a while it sparked my interest in controlling directivity. Effectively I can now enjoy a really nice, coherent bass where previously I either had no bass, one-note bass or a confused muddle. So perhaps the handicap of a bad room is a good way of concentrating one's attention

I'm strictly digital. I don't have a record collection except from some stuff from my childhood that I don't care too much for. So it'd be a bit silly first to invest in an expensive turntable and then in a vinyl collection, especially since I don't think it is sonically superior."

Χα! Θα ηθελα λιγο κουτσομπολιο για το διαζυγιο με τον grimm: "Although I'm 100% responsible for the design (bar the rather clever idea of using the legs for diffraction control which is Eelco's) it is now, for all intents and purposes, someone else's product."

"my primary reason for making a cardioid is to make an attractive speaker that works well anywhere and doesn’t require users to find the magic spot in their room that sounds good. So it’s user friendliness I’m after, something anyone can buy, set up and enjoy".

"I use current drive wherever it helps reduce distortion. The midrange, for instance is entirely current driven. Some confusion is caused by the term "Entzerrung" which could mean reduction of nonlinear distortion but is more usually taken to mean equalisation (i.e. correction of linear distortion). A DSP can easily do EQ but removing nonlinear distortion is quite hard. It's possible but none (including Klippel's excellent work) is far enough to be usable for a design like the THREE.

I need to have the LF extension on the web page corrected. The flat portion of the response is indeed +/-0.1dB but the low corner is at -3dB as one would expect.

There is one XLR that is switchable between AES and analogue. RJ45 connectors provide loop-through in case the speakers are used wired. In wireless mode there is only the 230V to plug in. 2 rotary switches allow rudimentary EQ to match placement.

The only classical crossover point in the filter is between mid and high, 2kHz. Below that there is quite a game going on with overlapping frequency bands to shape the wave front. This is why we say that the filter is not comparable to a classical crossover filter. The concept of crossover frequency is not defined in a design like this. All the DSP hardware and amps were designed new specifically for the THREE. The processor is one of the bigger Sharcs.

My listening room is 6x9x3. It's difficult to say how big a room they'll handle since that really depends on how loud you want to listen at what distance. But I wouldn't be afraid to demo in a room twice the size of mine. Actually I think it'll be more interesting to try really small rooms to hear the diminished impact of the room modes. I haven't had the chance of doing that.

The next model up (TWO) is a floorstanding version with the same drivers but more woofers going all the way down. Higher models have not yet been decided on. I'd love to make a scaled up version that you could actually use as a decent PA

The FOUR would be a scaled down version, like 15x30x30cm and not more than half the price of the THREE. This will be a serious challenge."
