“Two Collector’s Editions” Planned for Gran Turismo 5?



The Gran Turismo 5 Collector’s Edition was announced at E3, but now it seems that may not be the only special version of the game Sony has plans for. Speaking in an interview with IVG, head of Sony Computer Entertainment India Atindriya Bose clearly discloses that there are “two collector’s editions” in the works:

For GT5, there are two collector’s editions. One is the game plus some added content and collectibles, which (has already been announced), while the other is in a really big package with a lot of paraphernalia that goes beyond the game. It’s all car-related, but I’m unaware of the exact contents. That being so expensive, we may not directly order it from Europe, but we could bring in limited quantities from Sony in the Middle East. We’ll also be working with Mercedes in some way around the GT5 launch, but we’re yet to decide the specifics of that.

Product listings at Amazon.fr support his statements, including both the “standard” Collector’s Edition for €99.00 and a more mysterious “Gran Turismo 5 – édition ultime” listed at €189.95. Hopefully details for the “ultimate edition” will be finalized in time for the next round of GT5 revelations at Germany’s Gamescom next month…
UPDATE: An online Finnish retailer has also listed what appears to be the more expensive Collector’s Edition, referred to as the Gran Turismo 5 “Signature Edition”. Thanks to Myffe for the tip!

GT5’s Online Community Features Let You Track Friends’ Progress

New (though minor) details about Gran Turismo 5’s online community features have apparently been discussed in the latest issue of “PlayStation: The Official Magazine”. Via SystemLink:

“My Lounge is GT5’s hub from which you’ll access all of GT5’s new online features. Hit the Community tab and you’ll pull up a bulletin board filled with your latest stats and your recent mail from friends and other players. You can browse through your friends’ bulletin boards and check their progress on and offline, and send out mail and challenges. My Lounge supports voice chat for up to 32 players and lets you host 16-player online races or spectate on races in progress, as well as watch the GT-TV VOD service and race replays.”

GT5’s Premium Cars Go “Beyond” PS3’s Capabilities

A few more interesting quotes have emerged from the GT5 article in the latest ”PlayStation: The Official Magazine (UK)”. According to Kazunori Yamauchi, Polyphony Digital has essentially future-proofed the game’s 200+ “Premium Cars”:

“The level of precision we’ve achieved [in GT5] is actually more suited to the next generation of machines. The detail that goes into a premium model [has] gone beyond the level of the current PlayStation.”

This statement complements Yamauchi’s previous remarks about Gran Turismo 6 last November:

“You won’t have to wait as long as you did for GT5. GT5 was basically the creation of a whole new operating system, and developing GT6 will be like adding new applications that run on that new operating system.”

However, since he made those comments, things may have changed according to more recent contradictory reports which hint GT6 may require another 5 years of development – something which would make sense if they now plan to release the game on the next generation of PlayStation hardware…

Here’s a nice little clip that’s emerged from the Gamelab a few weeks ago. Unlike that other clip from the show, there’s no mysterious breezes -- instead, it’s a full tour of GT5’s new Madrid circuit behind the wheel of a white Enzo Ferrari. Bumper cam is used for the first lap, but keep watching for the lap in the cockpit to begin at 2:20. Enjoy!
